Brilliant!
I loved it, the tipsy Butterfly set the mood, how funny was that! I thought Chris Packham's shirt was very funky indeed and Simon's campfire setting was so inviting.
I find the rut fascinating & I'm glad there were no creepy seals (sorry folks)
The S'hawk wasn't for me because I don't like captivity. bless him.
I thought the selection of viewers Q's in the after show were spot on.
Thumbs up so far from me :t:

Love it! A weekly slot spread over the whole autumn is much better than being crammed into a fortnight - it'll show us what's happening when and give us a chance to get out there and see it for ourselves :t:
Haven't watched the Unsprung section yet as I recorded it (both were on after my bedtiome as I was on early shift Saturday and therefore up at 4.15am!!! :-O) I'll watch it later today and see if it's as bad as folks are saying ;)

YAYYYYYYYyyyyyyyy my deer are back *sorry folks - I love 'em!* o:) I've got Hulne Park on my doorstep and seen Red, Roe & Fallow there so wondering if I'll see a bit of the rut there too if I get out early enough? The Roe will have finished their's but I'd love to hear/see Fallow & Red :t:

Series gets a definite thumbs up from me too so far :t: Mind you......Neil caught a few minutes of it last night before he went to work and he asked me if Kate was having an affair with Chris :eek!: MMmmm never noticed it myself - if anything she's not being as silly and gigly this time as she was in SpringWatch ;)

Hey Im with you guys, never thought Id think this was better with Bill presenting it. All looked a bit to presenter orientated for my taste. Still perhaps Im not the age group it seems to be aiming at.

I have just finished watching it on iplayer.

The music is good ...

Ahem!

I am at a loss as to who is their target audience. I don't like being talked down to. I don't like the childish and inane behaviour. I thought the ding ding business of a boxing ring when discussing the various stags puerile and ridiculous, but then again I don't like the humanisation of wildlife by giving them names and characters. I also have to admit I am all stagged out too!

However, I did enjoy the features on the orchard life, the Barnacle Geese, and the beavers.

The most 'entertaining' part of the Autumnwatch ( and Springwatch for that matter ) series, for me, is 'reading between the lines' of Chris Packham's off camera facial expressions that give away how mundane he feels that the content and script is. He's getting paid for it , of course, but I'm sure that he would rather bring himself down to 'kids level' in the real world, by teaching kids in classrooms, field studies, etc etc. The pseudo 'comedy' bits, ( his 'mad professor' bit for example' ) are so low budget and so unfunny that it was hilarious. I realy don't like the green-save-the-whale-limp-wristed-motor-cyclist guy either :-O
Oh dear, I've gone all 'Victor Meldrew'!

Kate Humble elected RSPB President.

I know this is an Autumnwatch thread (I should do I started it:-O) but as Kate is a presenter I thought I would add the news of Kate being elected President of the RSPB here. As Autumnwatch is just once weekly it will give us something to talk about in the interim period!

I say "good on you gal"! I feel she will be a good ambassador for the RSPB and will connect with adults and children alike! I wish her well over the next five years of her Presidency!:t:

Hi Pam

Like you have mentioned here Pam, Kate is a good icon for young and old wildlife lovers to relate to alike. She is so different to Ben Fogle, and she just has that extra 'something' anyday - French saying!! She has that extra ommpphh!!!

She maybe not so diverse with some of her subject matter as Bill Oddie. I still think she has an open mind and is interested in her subjects. Kate is knowledgeable, asks questions, and that is good in my eyes. She is interested and that is good for any presenter. :gh::gh:

IMHO. I feel she is the ideal canditate and well done to you Kate. You have my vote anyday! :gh::gh::t::t: :t::t

Regards
Kathy (and OH)

I'm an Oddie fan too.;) I always felt the shows were somewhat his 'baby'. I hope the beeb bring him back, but I think it unlikely. His knowledge was always underated in IMO although I know his humour is not to all tastes. Does anyone know how he is doing health wise?

Kate Humble RSPB President! I M O that is good as to many the image of the RSPB is of an organisation whose membership is made up of elderly folk. Kate at least brings some lets say 'youthful maturity', so in that respect I think her appointment is a good one and I wish her well.

I agree (at least if I have things correct) with cm8 with regard Chris Packham. I reckon he was far better suited to working on his earlier stuff with young people.

Now I'm starting to sound like old Victor too.;) Despite all my comments I do think these programmes are vitaly important. I just think the beeb need to have a good think about how they are presenting all of this. I love 'owt' to do with nature, but I don't watch this (very much) any more. As I suggested earlier, for me the thing has become repetitive and boring and needs a good overhaul or complete replacement. I like things to tax the brain a little and I don't see this programme doing that.

The one thing I would say it that I do understand why they use names for the deer. I think the great British public (including the kids) would find it far less interesting and entertaining if they were refering to say number such and such. The Red Kite Project up in the North East has been a fantastic success amongst people in the region, and especially the schools who adopt a Red Kite and name it. Don't get me wrong of course, as personally I don't much like the naming game and as far as I am concerned this whole damn deer business has gone well past it's sell buy date. They might as well just show repeats of the original action from the first time they did it (they could be for all I know). I think it has become a complete waste of licence payers money.

I wish Kate Humble every success in her new position. I can't say that I feel she will bring anything innovative to the RSPB. I'm one of those with the opinion that the only good thing that could ever happen to the RSPB would be to remove the 'R'.

It was good to hear in Unsprung that Bill is feeling a lot better and is working on a couple of projects at the Beeb. Will be interesting to see what those are! :t: I think in many ways Unsprung is far better than the actual Autumnwatch programme, the chaotic and informal approach really works (for me at least, I know others probably hate it) and the Sparrowhawk in the studio was definitely the best bit of the evening by far. I just wish Kate hadn't bumbled on about nothing throughout the programme!

It was good to have the update about Bill. I thought Unsprung good fun too Fozzy. I thought Kate handled that bird beautifully.
