AYTHYA HYBRID. North Somerset, England. 23.11.12 (1 Viewer)

Tank 2. Barrow Tanks. Near Bristol.

Found in a Pochard flock here today, with a white strong white band behind the nail, a furious white-blaze at bill-base, light blue bill.
Associated with Pochards, it initially looked like one. Same size and general proportions. Until we studied it through scope.
These hybrids are always bloomin minefields. But it looked like a Pochard with RND features overlayed, plus a "gorilla crest."
I filmed the bird near dark at 40x. But the grabs i supply are still just too far away for good examination. Though they give a suggestion.

Put bird out to locals. But would be interested to hear of any thoughts here?

Many thanks.:t:

Forgive me for bumping?

ps The bird had all the qualities of a Pochard. Until you studied it through a telescope.

Given how regular such birds are locally I suspect it a female Tufted x Pochard, probably the female equivalent of the Lesser Scaup type males that we see.
