Hi everyone,

I’m in the Uk, north east England.
hope you can help with this one.
just found this baby bird in the garden, does anyone know what it is and if it is too young to have left the nest?
it’s hopping about but not much else and constantly chirping.

Update - parent has been down twice in the last few hours, think it’s a sparrow. But baby has been alone for the last hour in the torrential rain. Temp is about 15 degrees Celsius. Seems to be breathing heavy. Not sure if this is normal. Keeps tucking his head in his back. Sweet little guy.

any advice or info greatly appreciated.

Hello, welcome to Birdforum!

Copied this from another thread (thanks Delia!):
We have some general guidelines here for the care of injured and baby birds. He's so young, I really don't know what it is, but does look a bit House Sparrowish. Virtually all birds of this age will take meal worms, but if you can't get them, then tinned cat food would do for the time being (not dog food).

But if the parents will look after the bird, then I think its best to take it back to the nest. If its a House Sparrow, it is often in a hole/cave or something like that somewhere above the bird.
And getting wet isnt good for such a young bird, so thanks for joining BF to help this bird!

Welcome to Birdforum. I hope you enjoy your visits.

If the parents are around, I wouldn’t worry too much. If you can leave some food nearby, that would be good.

Hello again,

the comment from Kits is most offen the best, but it is also true for birds with still closed eyes?
Far from an expert here, so I hope for more comments about this really important question imo. Thanks!

Thanks everyone for the advice.
I have no idea where the nest is as he was hopping all around the garden and we have lots of trees and shrubs and hedges.
He’s now made his way into a small corner under a tree to shelter from the terrible rain and looks asleep.he’s been there a couple of hours. It’s 8pm here.
Parent hasn’t been back for a long while.
Worried he won’t survive the night with the rain. ☹️ he’s found a little sheltered area but terrible rain here.
I have attached a video from this afternoon when the weather wasn’t as bad to show his eyes are open and he is chirping. Is he a fledging? Or a nestling? Very worried about him.

Thanks everyone.
