This morning there were two Green Sandpipers on Stafford Marsh and seven Common Sandpipers, two Dunlin and five Little Ringed Plover (found by Steve W.) on Black Hole Marsh. The Lrps were surprisingly elusive and I never got close to them in the gloomy conditions, so please find attached two rather naff photos. While I was there one of thr Lrps seemed to fly off towards the river.

Yesterday morning there were eight Common Scoter on the sea off the Spot on Kiosk and a lingering Balearic Shearwater for about 15 minutes. In the afternoon there was an adult Med Gull near Coronation Corner.

Dear Seaton Birders,

We will be staying in Colyton on holiday at the end of August. Came across this thread and it's a great resource for us.

Just wondered, is there anywhere for Marsh Tit? We managed to miss them in our usually reliable place this year, so hoped we might pick them up while down in Devon.

Thanks and good birding!

Hi John,

Marsh tit in Holyford Woods, just round the corner from Colyton. Make sure you pay regular visits to the marshes reserves, things should be really picking up at that time of year.

Hi John,

Marsh Tit is actually fairly frequent throughout the area. They can be found in Holyford Wood, Bovey Down (where Simon suggested) Morganhayes Wood, Ox Hill Wood, Heathayne Bridge (along the River Coly, a lovely walk from Colyton), Couchill Woods,The Undercliff Reserve, Bun's Garden,;) etc.... etc..etc. After Heathhayne, Morganhayes is nearest to Colyton on the New Sidmouth Road opposite the entrance to Ashdown Caravan Park.

Being the end of August you should definitley visit the new Black Hole Marsh reserve and Colyford Common, wader numbers should be picking up by then.

BIG FAVOUR!!!
One Show are on the lookout for filming hummingbird hawkmoth next week - thursday 5th August. I have advised them how desperately difficult this will be; on any given day its impossibloe to say whether there will be 5 or 500 along the south coast of Engaland let alone Devon let alone East Devon. But there we go, telly doesn't work like that and they are determined.

If anyone sees one over the next few days and would like to let me know, I will pass this on. With any luck our patch could be on BBC1 in a few days time!

Hi John,

Seaton Marshes is an excellent starting point, but also make sure you find Colyford Common, as there are paths through to Black Hole Marsh from this reserve too, with plenty to see at this time of year.

James
