Pleease .... Western Europe is good in economy, political system (democracy), freedom of speech but not in nature protection. The were anecdotes in the past, that a photographic film can be developed in such rivers like Loire, Thames or Rhine. I don't remember which one of these rivers was most popular. The western nature is almost completely destroyed. Obviously the environment is still in better condition in central and eastern Europe in comparison to western Europe coincidentally, because of inefficient economic system in the past, controlled by the state, not private persons, but not because authorities liked the nature. In case of NGOs - we have conflict of interest here, because they depend financially on EU, at least partially. So their opinions are not objective. This is probably why they are afraid of the term "national park" in my opinion. The European environmental law however works, is very useful, is not only sheet of paper like Polish law. The battle for Rospuda Valley (between PO and PiS parties in fact) was a good example. But Rospuda Valley still is not protected as a preservation, not included in Wigry National Park. Theatrical performance ended and everybody forgot about Rospuda. By the way - the valley probably overgrows. Maybe if European environmental law were similar to modern one dozens years ago and earlier, the situation would be better in west today. I am not expert, but it seems, that this law can't see primeval ecosystems, is based on active nature protection - money for NGOs and such belayed term - sustainable development. Be careful with opinion of NGOSs and people working in structures associated with EU, they are not objective !
