Hello, Here is A large brown bird and I thought it may be a brown cuckoo dove but not sure. It was spotted on the coast north of Yeppoon in Qld, an area of eucalyptus woodland and heath country,with freshwater creeks . Not a clear pic and taken from a long way away. But it may be recognised by someone knowledgeable.

Could be.. there are adult Brahminy Kites in the area.. yes I knew the tail was too short for cuckoo dove.. thanks for your reply !

Clearly a raptor and Brahminy Kite fits quite well on shape, range and habitat, though the white belly seems a bit odd
Yes I thought the same about the lighter feathers but a clearer shot would have solved the puzzle. Next time I’ll be more organised and might get a better pic. Yes a raptor though. Thanks for the reply

Definitely Brahminy Kite - not sure what year etc.
Quite unusual considering the adult bird has white head/neck/chest and darker belly/back/wings - but I have seen several shots of younger birds where the chest is dark and the belly pale.
Will look up books when I get home and see if it is illustrated.

(that's a photo of an adult female Little Eagle - light morph, on the front cover btw)
and Juvenile Brahminy Kite does indeed show with a pale belly (particularly the photo on p90) - so 100% that's your bird.

Thanks very much for taking the trouble to look this up. Yes there are lots of sea eagles and Brahminy kites in the area but I didn’t know the juvenile kite was so different to the adult birds. So now I know .. thank you !
