It's been revealed that an impressionist played the part of the nightingale in a 1924 performance for the BBC.
There's a quote in this article that I think isn't quite right as I'd say most people haven't heard a nightingale sing and even if they did they couldn't tell you what it was: "Ask anyone to name the bird with the most beautiful song, and most will say the nightingale."
