I've been trying to ID this bee from its very prominent antennae using image searches but without luck. This was a very large bee about 2cm long and the massive mandibles also should be a clue but no luck so any help appreciated. Location North Wales this week.
Thanks, John

Very nice photos. Not a true bee, it's a primitive hymenopteran, a sawfly (order Symphyta). This specimen seems to belong to genus Trichiosoma, potentially Trichiosoma tibiale (Hawthorn Sawfly).
