Reservoir Area Project Just a bit of an update on Beidaihe area birding environment - thought I'd put it here. (re previous comments above, I somehow failed to see cranes - though if the goodwill of all my friends here could make it happen, I should have seen several flocks at least :-O ) Went down to the reservoir (hadn't been there in more than 5 weeks) and there is some big project going on. I should probably have talked with someone, but mostly just saw workmen who I wasn't sure would want to chat about it. Next time I go, I'll try to find someone to chat up, or maybe someone here has heard about plans? Anyway, they were digging up the reservoir, both in front of the dam and behind it, with very large earth moving machines! I might have thought they were dredging, but they seemed to have dismantled a small part of the dam walkway, and there were at least 4 temp. construction workers shacks put up (which sounds to me like a larger project). On both sides they were digging up lots of the bottom, and piling the dirt up on the other side of the machine (to carry away? to create a dyke?). They've also pulled down a small cottage next to the reservoir. Inside the gates, things looked pretty much the same, except for some huge piles of dirt/debris - not entirely sure where it was from. I have no idea what the plan is for the reservoir wetlands - I assume this is intended to finally be an improvement and they certainly seem to have waited until the end of the season to do it (apparently to avoid interfering with migrating waterbirds) . I had noticed at the end of Nov. that the water level in the reservoir behind the dam was extremely low, but I don't know if that was seasonal or in preparation for this project. It doesn't appear that the project will impact the woods and area inside the fence, but hard to say.... Will let you know more if I hear about it. Hope plans may begin in earnest for a festival!
