I wanted to bring up the option of spending a few days in Hacienda Chichen - next door to the Chichen Itza ruins. The park and forest around the place gives opportunity for really good birding and even though there is no beach, there is a good pool. On one visit I photographed a pair of Becards while standing next to the pool. This is not a low cost place, but the combination of the birding and access to the ruins a couple of hours before the buses with mass tourists arrive makes it worth it. Could easily be combined with a week or so in one of the better coastal hotels. Another option is Trinidad. I have been to Asa Wright a couple of times, and it still is a favorite for birding etc. On my first visit there were 10 species of hummingbirds. We had a visitor who joined us there, who had been expecting to drive to the beach both days, but ended up never leaving the area. Spend 3 nights there and the rest of a vacation in a beach hotel in either part of TT.  Asa Wright is a bit away from everything else, though. Niels</blockquote>
