Again it seems if you are stating a fact and not just expressing an opinion. The 100-400 is both heavier and more expensive than the 400/5.6 and there are scores of uses who claim that it is soft at the long end, especially when using wide open as well as the AF being slower. There are also lots of people who do not get on with the push/pull zoom and it would seem there are a lot of copies various out there, not surprising when you consider the complexity of the lens compared with the relatively simple design of the 400/5.6. Even if I were to believe all that I would never say that the 100-400 is not capable super shots leave alone decent ones because it clearly is - I have seen some stunning shots from the lens. Some of the worlds best bird photographers rate the 400/5.6 as being a superb lens for Birds in flight because of its hand holdability, quick AF and sharpness and yet you stand above them all by saying there is no way they could even get a decent shot leave alone a really good one. I only started this game just over three years. I am a weakling OAP who took the hobby up as something to do in my retirement. I still consider myself very much a novice and at my age I doubt if I will ever get past that stage but I did think that I had made a little progress - up till very recently I had only ever used the 400/5.6 for bird photography (mostly hand held) and to be told (by your Inference) that there is no way I could have got any 'decent' shots from my chosen lens is very demoralising to say the least. We may not all come up to your standards as you have clearly made us aware but at the end of the day for most of us lesser souls it is just a hobby to enjoy - live and let live whatever gear you have :t:
