Hi everyone,

I’m new to the forum and thought I’d introduce myself. I’m based in Shelley, Huddersfield, and have a keen interest in wildlife photography. While I’ve mainly focused on birds and landscapes, I’m now hoping to photograph some foxes in their natural habitat.

I was wondering if anyone knows of good locations in or around Huddersfield where fox sightings are fairly common? They are quite elusive, so any tips on where (and when) to look would be greatly appreciated! Also, if anyone has advice on camera settings or techniques for capturing them in low light, I’d love to hear it.

Looking forward to hearing any wisdom you’re happy to share!

Thanks
Amy

Hi Amy, welcome to the forum. I think you will find us a friendly and helpful group. If you ask in this area of the forum, I’m sure someone will be able to help you:

Hi Amy,

Welcome to the forum. I hope you can find some of your local foxes but please don't be surprised if members are reluctant to give exact information on a species that is habitually persecuted in the countryside and possibly also by the mindless in towns.

I can't give specifics for Huddersfield, but they often favour rough scrub at the boundaries of towns. Any time of day may yield sightings, but first light tends to be the most reliable time in my experience.

Allotments may yield results. Foxes are experts at living close to humans inconspicuously (although it doesn't feel like that during the mating season!) - try talking to allotment gardeners and see what wildlife they see. (This can work well with anglers along rivers and canals as well.)
