Big birds heading north in the middle of winter. (1 Viewer)

I was on a walk earlier this day and saw a flock of around 10 swans or geese flying on low altitude (50-70 meters maybe) in the northern direction. I'm in eastern Europe, Ukraine, it's -17C now, has been this cold for few days, before it was a pretty warm December and January, no snow at all. I wonder why would birds migrate in the middle of winter and towards north. Is it an anomaly?
