Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve. (1 Viewer)

After a week of health issues and always being behind the birds Gary finally a new bird with a Purple Heron at Minsmere this evening (#249).

Gary narrowly failed to make the ambitious target of 250 species by the end of May, dipping on the Greenish Warbler at Gunton in failing light this evening. There is always tomorrow ....

Gary successfully observed the Greenish Warbler at Gunton today (#250). Other potential additions in June include Quail, Honey Buzzard, Roseate Tern, Wood Warbler, Red-necked Phalarope and if it lingers, Bonapartes Gull.

That's 5/6 of the work done in under half the year - on a bike. It is a tremendous achievement: and with a few bankers to catch up with during the rarity doldrums of June and early July (I may be going to regret saying that) Gary is in an excellent position to clinch the record and get over the 300 target. Bravo already!

Gary suffered one of his few dips this year, missing out on the Kentish Plover at Landguard on Thursday. Other dips this year comprise Bonaparte's Gull (hopefully the bird at Ashington will linger), Iceland Gull (should be straightforward) and Red-footed Falcon (may not be so easy to claw back).

Gary was in Thetford heading towards Lincolnshire last time I spoke to him

Another miss unfortunately yesterday - having started out in Lincoln with the intention of cracking on to the Little Bittern at Old Moor Gary was seduced by a Marsh Warbler at Huttoft Bank but there was no sign by the time he arrived. So onwards again for the Little Bittern which he will probably reach late of Wednesday.

Again no sign of the Marsh Warbler this morning so Gary set off for the Little Bittern at Old Moor only once again to be faced with a detour, this time a Red-necked Phalarope at Blacktoft Sands. I am unable to get hold of Gary this evening to see if this time the deviation was fruitful.

RN Phal still there at 19:30 per Birdguides, so hopefully...

Red-necked Phalarope safety secured by Gary yesterday evening for his 251st species of the year, the same as he managed in the entirety of 2010 cycling around Britain visiting every RSPB and WWT reserve. He is currently en route to Old Moor with no distractions!

Little Bittern at Old Moor RSPB this evening (#252). Gary will mow head back east to spend the weekend at Spurn and hopefully a bit of late migrant action.

Good positioning!

All the best

Certainly was - Gary is doing one more day on Spurn then heading up to Wykeham Forest. He will be taking a break for a week from Friday to go back to the West Midlands to vote and celebrate his 60th birthday.

He is probably a little behind his indicative schedule (which did involve spending the whole of August on North Ron) but his progress has been excellent. Next milestone I am setting for him is 270 species by the time he leaves for the Northern Isles which may now be mid August - should be achievable with the following up for grabs in Scotland and northern England:

King Eider, Capercaille, Ptarmigan, Golden Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Osprey, Honey Buzzard, Corncrake, Quail, Boneparte's Gull, Roseate Tern, Black Guillemot, Rock Dove, Wood Warbler, Icterine Warbler (if it lingers long enough), Crested Tit, Hooded Crow, Twite

Capercaille, in July?? Is it really feasible, when they 'disappear' at this time of year?

Ptarmigan, on a bike?? :eek!: :eek!: :eek!:

A successful few days since the last update with the addition of Quail (#255) near Market Weighton - another he missed last year - and a surpressed suspected breeding Schedule One bird (#256).
