Bah humbug
At the end of the day he can only go with what's in front of him and the British List as it stands. I don't think there will be any issue of him halting once any particular milestone is met as I suspectvtjis will be the last year him attempts such a challenge.

What I am less sure about is what listing authority is being used for the European Green record and how certain species are affected eg Mealy Redoll, Green-winged Teal.

As per Bubo for Europe you can use the main 3 - Assoc. of European Record Committees, Dutch Birding WP and UK400 club WP. I guess he just needs to maximise subspecies which could come in one or the other and see how it pans out (I assume the Spanish record would be based on the Spanish List; ie the AERC one).

The current European Birding record of 304 species was set by Ponc Feliu in 2013, purely birding in Catalonia. A summary of his year, with list, is attached.

For the first time in four days no ticks today for Gary, a last chance saloon Honey Buzzard flew over North Light but headed back out to sea rather than traversing the island. Still plenty of potential - two ticks present today just across the water at Sumburgh Head in the form for Little Bunting and RB Flycatcher.

After a blank day yesterday a tick today for Gary in the form of a Bluethroat (#288). Now just one short of last year's tally - hope the record breaking bird is a decent BB rarity.

Well done Gary, two crackers with which to pass last year's total!

Made all the sweeter by (a) the Great Snipe being a lifer and (b) refinding the bird this afternoon when he was the only one still looking.

Onwards and upwards to the next milestone - the acid test of a good year list, 300 species.

Anyone betting against him being on 300 before leaving Fair Isle? I'm not!

Sailings of the Good Shepherd become vastly reduced towards the end of September so Gary's intended movements over the next few weeks (bird and weather dependent) are as follows:

Thursday 29th Sept - sail to Grutness to join up with his regular birding 'crew' on Shetland Mainland
Tuesday 11th Oct - sail back to Fair Isle
Tuesday 18th or Tues 25th Oct - sail back to Grutness and on up to Lerwick

From there it will be back to Aberdeen, stopping off in Orkney if required. Then down to the Bean Goose flock at Fannyside, hugging the east coast in case of a pronounced Little Auk movement.

After a blank yesterday another tick today on Fair Isle with a classic Northern Isles autumn regular, Little Bunting (#291).

There'll be a few of us arriving on Fair Isle 13th October until 19th - we'll help Gary as much as we can!

Another day another tick, this time in the form of a Red-breasted Flycatcher (#292). Unfortunately the Spotted Crake at Da Water eluded him - one for tomorrow!

There is an outside chance that he could break the European record whilst in the Northern Isles - Gary needs 13 species and has probably 5 weeks left on Fair Isle and Shetland.

Potential ticks include Barnacle Goose, a range of American waders (AGP, Pec, Buff-breasted), Iceland Gull, OBP, Pechora, Red-flanked Bluetail, Sib Stonechat, Subalp, PG Tips, Pallas's W, Radde's W, Blyth's Reed, Issy Shrike, Arctic Redpoll, Arctic Redpoll

Tough going for Gary on Fair Isle at the mo - now his fifth day without a tick. There is a steady stream of scarcities (Common Rosefinch, Richard's Pipit, Short-toed Lark, Little Bunting, Bluethroat, Lapland Bunting, Yellow-browed Warbler etc) and even a few rarities (Lanceolated Warbler and Great Snipe) but nothing new that he needs other than a Spotted Crake that although he has seen and heard is not yet satisfied with the views to tick in.

With the sailing of the Good Shepherd brought forward to today and Thursday's boat cancelled due to impending bad weather it looks like Gary will be on Fair Isle until at least next Tuesday.

293 - Paddyfield Warbler

And a lifer to boot!

Not sure Gary will get any birding in now before Friday afternoon given the gales and driving rain but the winds are currently forecast to have an easterly element from Saturday afternoon right through to Monday evening.
