Binocular bargains (4 Viewers)

Cabelas has a 20% off sale on Cabelas branded items. That would include all their binoculars.

Not only that, but the Guide Series binos are on sale too, and they will still take an additional 20% off the sale price. This makes the 8x32 version about $119.90, with free shipping. IIRC, these are the same as a Leupold Mojave. For anyone wanting a low-priced 8x32, there is no better deal right now.

Phil:

Thanks for the heads up. On the Leupold subforum, Steve C. did a nice
review of the Mojave BX-3 8x32. If this is the same one, then that is
a deal. I bit.

Phil .... I did exactly as you outlined and went to Cabela's last night and picked up the last 8X32 Guide. My original intent was to get the 10X32 but there was a noticeable lack of brightness compared to the 8X in a well lit store. The 8X was a real surprise at how nice it is. I have been using it off and on this morning and no disappointments. The only one left was the demo and I took it since it looked in perfect condition and most importantly, it has a very smooth focus (unlike the ones I tried when it first came out). Also I did not want to gamble with Cabela's online system as mentioned below. I found out this morning that was a good decision.

As far as your comment on the Guide and the Mojave being the same, I agree. The sales rep and I compared the 10X32 Guide with the 10X32 Mojave and we could not tell a difference other than the cosmetics and badging.

Unfortunately for online shoppers, Cabela's online site is showing the 8X32 as sold out this morning, but I have noticed over time that Cabela's is great for showing sold out one day and back in stock the next. Just because it is sold out online does not mean a local store is out of stock.

Jerry ... I take it you ordered yours online yesterday. As an FYI, Cabela's did not have an online real time inventory system as of earlier this year. They update the inventory as a batch process at night. That means if they had 10 in stock yesterday morning and sold 15 online over the course of the day, 5 folks are going to be disappointed. Since they show out of stock this AM, you could be in for a surprise, so keep tracking your order status. I lost on Cabela's inventory roulette on a Swaro earlier this year but ultimately hit the jackpot after raising a stink! I hope you win the spin of the wheel because the 8X32 Guide is a very nice binocular.

I received an e-mail from Eagle Optics today that Swarovski 8.5x42 EL SVs are on sale at Eagle Optics for only $2,179.00. It has Swarovski's older model strap attachments which were used for a couple of decades before the new attachment system came out.

My 8x32's made it in today. Very decent for the money. Couldn't agree more.

............

The 8X32 Guide is showing back in stock today at Cabela's. Sale price is $149.88. I read on another site that prices at Cabela's ending in 88 cents means it is on close out. I can not confirm if that is correct. The additional 20% off coupon code appears to have ended but there is a free shipping code 96ANNIV.

Old 45 ..... Glad to hear you were able to get yours. Hope Jerry was also successful. I also thought right after getting them that they are decent for the money. The more I use them, I now think they are very good even at the regular price and beyond. I am very happy with this purchase.

Tract has a $100 off code that just came out. That makes a 10x42 Toric just $565 shipped in the US. A great deal for someone needing a new 42mm bino but does not want to spend alpha money......

Code is: ELKCAMP2016

Wow, the original SLC HDs. I didn't know any more existed on the planet. And there are four of each.

Ed

Are these older ones more desireable for some reason? Just curious on what sets then apart or what is different from the newest version. I want a pair of swarovski and these seem to be priced good.

Diesel79 ... To me, the prior version, which is usually referred to as the Swarovski SLC 8X42 WB HD, is the preferred choice over the current version, the Swarovski SLC 8X42 WB.

Both have Swaro HD glass, which I believe is now true for all Swaro current models, so Swaro has dropped the HD in the name.

The primary difference between the two generations are:
- The prior gen allows for a closer focus distance. About 6 feet vs 10.5 feet in a 8X.
- Armoring style and coloring.

Optically, they are considered the same. There may have been some minor changes made to accommodate the focus reengineering, but the end view should be unchanged. Some folks speculate that Swaro makes ongoing coating improvements throughout the life of a model, but I seriously doubt if there is any visual difference between the two.

Swaro models are known to have some sticking in the focus mechanisms. It varies from unit to unit. I have noticed less of that is the last year so a recent production model may be a little smoother. If it does have some sticking, the binocular can be sent to SONA for improvement under warranty.

I held out for the HD version because of the close focus and the prior armoring. Other than a possible smoother focus, I can not think of any improvements in the current generation over the prior HD model. If the price is right for you, then go for it!

It is an excellent binocular, equivalent to the Zeiss HT. It is a difficult call to say which is better between the SLC and the HT.

Bruce has things right I believe, that seller on EBay is from Canada, so
be sure to check if the warranty applies in the USA.

Other than that, a good buy.
