Mike,

Thanks for the info. Now if he just had some 8x42s.....;)

OJ,

I thought the sportstars were always a great buy. Poor quality control at that price point as I once had a time when I went through about a dozen boxes at the local Cabelas before I found a "cherry pair" but well worth the effort.

Yeah, I gave my pair of Nikon Sportstar to my sisters kids, and picked up 2 more so that each of her kids can have their own pair. IPD is not a problem with the double hinge. And they are decent if not great binoculars. They go on safari often in South Africa. Her Optolyths went down with the fungus barrel. She now has a Bushnell Legend 8x42 Roof and a Leupold Yosemite. So the whole family is covered.

On a different topic we discussed loss of value. If you want to buy something just to "try this new thing out" you are better off buying used. The resale value is closer to what you paid for it. When you sell it again.

Vipers and other Vortex have good resale value.

interesting post about resale value. I always glance around for
the Browning 8x32 just for the heck of it even though I already have a pair.

They are impossible to find and no one seems to be reselling theirs.
I wonder what they would go for . . . probably around the closeout price
from last year??

Hmmm, not sure I would ever sell my Brownings. I've been searching for a better 8x32 at a sub $350 price tag and haven't found anything that bests the Brownings, which I bought for about one-third of my target price tag. I haven't tried a bunch but the Pentax DCF SPs are, from what I could tell, the exact same bin underneath with just different rubber on top. The Kowa BD32-8x was no better either (but a bit lighter with maybe slightly better flare control). Nothing else seems to rise to the top for my consideration except at a much higher price range. So my two go to bins are by 8x42 FLs and my Brownings.

I have never owned the Brownings but I almost did...once. I was quite enthused by their optical performance for the price. I noticed a pair at the local Cabelas several years ago but when I went back to buy them they were gone. I have not seen any since.

Shame, it seems like they are turning into a bit of a cult classic. ;)

I see that the Celestron Noble 10x42 binoculars are for sale on Ebay for $125 again. Here is a link but is probably just as easy to search ebay for "Celestron Noble"

Hello

I have checked recently and Opticron Discovery WP PC 8x32 are now £125 (incl. delivery which is £5) at the digital camera shop.

I have recently been looking online for these in the UK and the best I can find them is for £109 (free delivery) at Sherwoods:

http://www.sherwoods-photo.com/opticron_binos/opticron_field.htm

They come with a free lens cleaning kit as well. I haven't used this supplier before but will be ordering a pair of these in the next couple of days. I will post an update if there are any issues.

Seems like a good deal, I have seen them priced at up to £195.....

I think I may have to hold for the Vortex Raptors. They should be in the same price range and I am intrigued by the 6.5x32 and 8.5x32 configurations.

eagleoptics has the leupold yosemite for $80 to your door, or at least they did last week.

They've got the 6x30 for $80, the 8x30 are $98. Still a good price since shipping in included. Sports Authority would be a little cheaper ($87 to Denver).

Thank you Mike for the heads up on these Celestron Nobles. I made an offer of $110 plus the $12 shipping and it was accepted. I am now in possesion of the binoculars. They were in the factory packaging and I do not see any indications that they are factory seconds or returns.

I am a complete novice when it comes to binoculars. I needed to replace an old pair of Bushnell porros that I have had 35 years. I am very pleased with the new glasses. Thanks again Mike!

Stokes DLS 8x42 for $499 at Eagle Optics.

I saw this price this morning, thought it must be a mistake. I bought a pair of Vipers last summer for this price, and thought, and continue to think they were a great value at $500. But from what I can tell the Stokes DLS is a significant step beyond, and a steal at this price.

Jason at Eagle Optics did a price match of sorts on the Leupold 8x42 Cascades that I just ordered. $206.95, including shipping.
