I was camping on the Garrision-Scilly, back in the 80's the night the Hurricane decimated the south coast & that wasn't to bad, it was leaving on the Scillonian that afternoon. It was so rough that when we got to Penzance we rode arond the anchor for 7 hours till 2am & after docking 5 of us in a car then drove up to Nanquidno to wait for it to get light. Nobody slept, the rain was hammering down & when it got light we made a half-hearted attempt to look for a Parula in the pouring rain, after about half an hour we just gave up & headed for home. I've done quite a bit of Nightjar survey work & wandering around at night you don't feel threatened, but last year it was about 2.30am & I was above Matlock when I could see 3 lots of flashing blue lights. After a bit I could see torches heading my way, obviously searching for something or someone, I did spend the rest of my survey wondering if I was going to bump into some nutter being pursued by the police, but the police soon left & I saw nothing untoward but your mind does start getting carried away in situations like this. Mike.
