It's always a mystery as to why sick people do what they do. We try and find reasons, such as alcohol abuse, drug taking, mental and medical disorders, upbringing etc etc but I think the main issue is that a lot of people have no respect for anything but themselves (and perhaps none for themselves either). I often get drunk out of my skull, and sometimes when I am, I help snails across the road just like I do sober, in the past when I have abused alcohol over periods of time, I was still birding and not causing trouble anywhere. One of the admittedly very few times I've dabbled in controlled substances, I ended up stopping a fight amongst strangers. I am frequently bored, at the moment I'm in the middle of some sort of depression where everything just leaves me feeling horribly neutral - haven't done any proper birding or painting for nearly 3 weeks and I'm starting to get fed up of the apathy. However, that doesn't mean I'm going to go out and shoot something with a crossbow for laughs. Why, because I was brought up to respect other things and other people. It's too easy for people to blame their behaviour on their situation (people excusing their own bad behaviour and others trying to explain it) but it's much more complicated than that. What happened to this oystercatcher makes me very angry.
