No, it is not generally permitted in the UK in the breeding season. Special permission would be required and would only be granted under tightly defined circumstances for a very special reason.

Generally yes, it is permitted. I cannot immediately think of any exceptions !

i did send them a message on the 26th nov and got reply on the 28th

Thanks for getting in touch with us. I've copied and pasted excerpts from the Ringing Guidance, Chapter 4:


"Sound lures... must not be used to attempt to call down and catch migrating passerines at night, as this might interrupt their migration. Birds must only be lured to their normal habitat. For diurnal species, lures must not be used more than one hour after sunset or more than one hour before sunrise."
"Use of sound lures for passerines during the breeding season should be restricted to targeting specific individuals, e.g. as part of a RAS project, rather than ad hoc use at a net."
"When using sound lures during the breeding season, the following conditions must be followed:

• They must only be played continuously for a maximum of 10 minutes within any territory, with at least a 30-minute gap before use in the same territory again.
• Use must be limited to a maximum of three times in a single day in any single territory, in order to prevent excessive disturbance; in practice, if a bird has failed to respond to the first few attempts, experience suggests that it is unlikely to respond thereafter.
• It is advisable that the net/trap is watched continually from a suitable distance, so that as soon as the target bird(s) is caught, the sound lure can be switched off and the bird(s) processed and released.
