Birding at Loch of Kinnordy (2 Viewers)

I was at kinnordy for 5 mins this afternoon and had great views of the young marsh harrier. Alas i didn't have my camera with me...typical. Its packed away ready for my trip to new york tomorrow.

It was also good to see there are still 5 young moorhen chicks outside the gullery hide aswell.

I hope to do a report on my trip to new york, washington and baltimore while staying with my american friends. Dont know how much bird watching i'l be able/aloud to do, but the bins are hidden at the bottom of the suitcase...wonder how they got there!!??

Darell

Enjoy your holiday Darell - you're sure to have a good time.

Hope the Marsh Harrier hangs around for a bit till I get over there again.

the marsh harrier was showing well at the east hide today,it had a blue tag on its left wing,i was happy as this was my first sighting of the year, a couple in the hide were even happier as it was their first marsh harrier sighting ever,it put on a good show and dont think it could have flown any nearer, it circled a few times just to the left of the hide then flew over to the other side and dissapeared into the trees,it returned about 12/15 mins later by which time an osprey had flown in and landed on the perch directly opposite the hide, the harrier flew left and right hunting on the opposite side and the osprey kept a close eye on it,i took a couple of pics trying to get both birds in frame at once but i never changed my camera settings and the osprey was out of focus, the harrier flew back into the bushes and the osprey imediatly launched itself off the perch and flew right towards the hide,it circled four times and dived catching a small perch,it then flew west, the two male ruddy ducks are at the east now in the far corner, somebody said there may be four there, plenty of mallards here plus tufted ducks, mutes, coots, and a heron, the male reedbunting was sitting close by calling and sedge warblers were fluttering about, there was two young buzzards calling their parents around at the lily pond and there quite a few blue damselflys here, moorhens were out swimming with their young one pair in front of the gullery hide had five very young birds in tow, there was a young robin (i dont often see these)in the trees beside the gullery hide ,swallows were flying about but no swifts this week, i also saw blue tit/chaffinch/carrion crow/common gull/herring gull/pheasant/jackdaw

there was 3 ruddy duck males on show today at the east side of the loch on the far side, the swamp hide had quite a bit of bird activity for this time of year, as well as the usual ducks mallards/tufted ,a heron was sitting opposite the hide with a little grebe swimming about right in front of it,mutes were swimming with cygnets and an osprey was hunting here, a buzzard flew over and some swallows were flying low, carrion crows were in the trees and another heron was sitting on the tree with the jackdaw nestbox, all these birds were on show at the same time ,i took my eye off the osprey (watching the buzzard) and the osprey landed on the trees where the rooks nest,it flew off almost as soon as it landed and circled for a while not making a dive,a vistor claims he may have spotted a goshawk at the swamp hide, im not sure if he wrote it in the book as i left before him,i had a sparrowhawk from the east hide and the male reedbunting was putting in a good show singing his heart out, sedge warblers and blue tits were jumping about in the reeds, there was a lot of birdsong from the trees wren/robin, i was actually heading for loch brandi when i stopped at kinnordy but lost some time as a tree was hit by lightening on the meigle road and the fallen branch completely blocked the road:C http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d91/kawwauser/branch.jpg i came in via lintrathen which meant a stop off watching flocks of starlings some jackdaws a kestrel and some loch pics, in hindsight i wish i spent the day at kinnordy by the time i reached loch brandi(i climbed to the top) low clouds, mist ruined the day,http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d91/kawwauser/lochbrandi.jpg apart from kestrel meadow pipit i did see a nice snipe flying from a swamp area at rottal

Today it was sunshine mixed with heavy downpours for most of the time i was there.

The Ospreys were around for alot of the time although i had expected the young ones to start to venture down by now. The male was fishing for most of the day and was joined by the female in the afternoon...he obviously wasn't catching them quick enough for her liking. He did spend alot of his time sitting on one of the perches for long periods.

It was pretty quiet outside the gullery hide with mallard, moorhen and coot around. Other birds in that area included treecreeper, blue tit, willow warbler, sedge warbler and wren. I did see a couple of swifts early on and later some swallows and sand martins.

Along at swamp there were mallard, teal, mute swans, lapwing 60+, oycs, wigeon and heron. At the east end there was a female ruddy duck but no sign of any males, wigeon, coot, heron, moorhen and gadwall.

Other birds seen were buzzard, sparrowhawk, woodpigeon, crow, rook, pheasant, starling and blackbird.

While the sun was out, there were quite a few damsel flies around aswell as dragon flies.

I am doing some guided walks on tuesday and thursday mornings starting at 10am plus wednesday afternoon at 2pm this week.

was at the loch early this morning, two little grebes outside the gullery hide. Also a young water rail on the bogbean and an adult out in the open a little later.

I was at kinnordy today taking some people for a guided walk and it was overcast all day with showers. Not the best weather for a walk but it wasn't too bad.
It was quiet infront of the gullery hide when i arrived with only a couple of coots. I could see over to the east that there were a few wigeon, coots, mallard and gadwall together with some mute swans and cygnets. One of the ospreys was sitting on one of the posts and was soon joined by the other parent who went and perched on the other post. A third one arrived and decided that with no room on the posts, it would go and sit on top of the tall pine tree opposite the gullery hide.

We took a walk along to the swamp hide to find it was quiet as well. Mallards and teal over on the far side. There were willow warblers, blue tits and great tits outside the hide, in the bushes on the left. We then headed for the east hide where we got closer views of the osprey before they flew off back to the nest.
We headed for the lilly pond and saw robin, wren, great spotted woodpecker, dunnock, woodpigeon, sandmartin, swallow, buzzards, long tailed tits, coal tits, chaffinch and blackbird. It was very quiet round at the pond with only blue, great and coal tits showing themselves. We did get a glimpse of a sedge warbler but it didn't hang around long.

Back at the east hide i saw that the sign, outside the hide, showing distances to the other hides and kirrie was broken. Apparently a couple of weeks ago some "young people" broke it in half so they could use it to knock some nest boxes out of the trees....why!!!???

From gullery hide we again saw the two ospreys fly in and go straight to their posts where they stayed for quite a while.

Darell

More walks tomorrow afternoon and thursday morning.:t:

Tuesday was pretty grim, yesterday the sun was out but very windy and today started off overcast with no wind and ended up being a really nice day.

There was very little bird life around yesterday afternoon apart from the ospreys, sparrowhawk, buzzards, mallards, wigeon, teal, gadwall, coot and moorhens. Everything else seemed to be sheltering from the strong winds.
The male osprey was busy fishing all afternoon and took at least three large fish back to the nest before deciding enough was enough and catching himself a beauty and taking it on to one of the perches to eat.

Today we went off for the walk and saw bullfinches, goldfinches, chaffinch, blue tit, great tit, long tailed tit, willow warbler, sedge warbler, heron, lapwing, oycs, mallard, teal, gadwall, wigeon, coot, moorhen, water rail chick, sparrowhawk, buzzards, ospreys, sand martins, swallows, house martins, wren, robin, woodpigeon, crows, reed bunting, mute swan and cygnets and grey wagtail. There was also a fly past of 200+ common gulls later on in the afternoon.

Booking is essential. Contact the warden on 01382 630783 or email [email protected]

Meet in the reserve car park

Admission is free

Wear wram clothing and please bring a torch.

We might see the otters as well. The male was seen at 6pm last sunday, so they are around.

I was at kinnordy early this morning to count all the wildfowl that was around.

At the swamp end it was really quiet with only 3 mute swans, 3 cygnets, a single mallard and 34 lapwing. Outside the gullery hide it was slightly buisier with mallard, gadwall, coot and mute swan. Over at the east end there were tufties, moorhen, gadwall, wigeon, coot, mute swans and mallard.

I went for a walk to the edge of the reserve and saw treecreeper, blue tit, great tit, coal tit, long tailed tit, goldfinch, chaffinch, goldcrest, wren, robin, woodpigeon, pheasant, blackbird, crow, rook, jackdaw, common gull, buzzard, sparrowhawk, dunnock and heron.

Back in the gullery hide a couple of snipe flew past and the number of lapwing increased to over a hundered.

The Osprey parents were quite busy during the time i was there and continued to fish all day.

The loch contains both pike and perch but its usually the pike that the ospreys seem to catch most of the time.

The weather this morning was pretty awfull with grey clouds and showers but the afternoon did brighten up slightly. It wasn't cold though.

I checked the rain guage this morning and there wasnt much in it but, as soon as i had checked it and written everything down, the heavens openned again!!!

i was at kinnordy early this morning, the whole loch was pretty quiet which is ususal for this time of year, the swamp hide had mutes with cygnets/mallards,the rooks were sitting in the tree where they were nesting earlier, flocks of lapwing were flying over and a couple landed on the other side, the gullery hide was totally deserted ,looking over to the trees on the other side i noticed a buzzard sitting on the pine tree, while checking the bushes etc on the other side i noticed two ospreys sitting on perches, i then decided to head straight for the east hide, there were some great tits/blue tits in the trees beside the feeders, the east hide had a family of coots plus mutes/mallard/tufted duck/sedge warbler/reedbunting/heron/woodpigeon/carrion crow/swallow,i was watching the two ospreys on the perches when a third osprey appeared and started to hunt, the osprey on the perch directy opposite the hide took flight and began to mob the third bird,it mobbed it for a good fifteen mins and both birds ended up flying really high, the third bird took off and the osprey returned to its perch, another osprey appeared (maybe the third bird again )and again the osprey on the opposite perch attacked it,looking through the pics i got, the aggressor was the male with the missing tail feather

Wednesday 27th August

This was our Osprey watch evening and unfortunately no Ospreys turned up. Hannah had seen one at the nest area earlier in the day but none of them were hungry enough to come down even for a snack.

Along at the swamp hide there were mallard, two families of mute swan, a single female goldeneye, coot, rooks and water rail which could be heard but not seen. A flock of common gulls 250+ could be seen flying west to roost somewhere.

We headed along to the gullery hide for the rest of the evening and from there we could see gadwall, wigeon, mute swans, tufties and mallard over to the east while a large group of rooks congregated in the field opposite the hide and were later seen heading eastwards. A large cloud of starlings appeared about 8.30 but soon disappeared into the reeds followed by a further 3 groups who again circled for a very short time before joining the other flocks in the reeds.

We had hoped the otters might show, but like the ospreys, decided to stay away.

Sunday 31st August

Not a great day for nice weather. It started off ok but soon turned to showers etc.

I arrived just too late to see a kingfisher infront of the gullery hide. The person spotted it, just as he was openning a window, shouted "Kingfisher" who in turn fled the scene in fright, not to be seen again!!!

A single Osprey sat at the top of the tall pine tree, opposite the hide and stayed there for as long as i was in the hide. Mallard, coot, moorhen, mute swans with cygnets, teal and wigeon were also visable from the gullery hide. Goldcrest, Great spotted woodpecker, siskin, greenfinch, redpoll, robin, wren, blue tit, great tit and coal tits were all in the area at the bottom of the gullery boardwalk.

Along to the swamp hide where there was a solitary female Goldeneye, a flock of 30+ Lapwing, mallard, rooks, jackdaws, pheasant, snipe and common gulls. In the pine trees to the right of the hide, a redpoll could be seen along with lots of willow warblers. Sedge warblers were present in the reeds below the trees along with reed buntings.

When i arrived back at the gullery hide the Osprey was sitting on top of the perch...dont know how many are still at the nest site, if any.

From the east hide there were tufties, wigeon, mallard, coot, moorhen, mute swans, lesser black backs and alot of swallows, sand martins and house martins helping themselves to the insects.

Other birds seen were curlew, blackbird, chaffinch, bullfinch, treecreeper and long tailed tits.

A good day for birds despite the weather.

Osprey still there this afternoon Darell. Sitting on the waterside perch with the remains of lunch - started eating more of it for tea (quite a big fish by the looks of it).

Hope you enjoyed your US trip

The reserve will be closed this saturday morning and also the morning of saturday September 20th. Its that time of year again, when there is shooting taking place.:-C

There aren't that many ducks around at the moment so lets hope they go away empty handed.

I will be there on saturday afternoon to see what is around/left.

Darell

I arrived at the west end at about 11am to see what was going on with the shooting. I didn't hang around long because i did like seeing the birds flying all over the place trying to get away from the area. :-C Even some of the swans took to the air to get away from it all.

I went away for an hour, returning when it was all over. As i drove towards the car park, five pheasants were crossing the road, back onto the reserve. They had obviously saught refuge in the fields opposite.

The swamp end was devoid of anything apart from a pair of swans with three cygnets, in front of the gullery hide there was nothing and at the east end there were mallard, teal, wigeon and gadwall. They had obviously had time to get some body armour on before the shooting started.

As time went on, a few more ducks appeared from reed beds etc seeing it was now safe to venture out again. Coot, moorhen and more swans appeared along with a large flock of common gulls..600+. The farmer was ploughing the field opposite so the gulls were working the field, coming down for a wash and drink, and then returning to the field again.

Other birds seen were woodpigeon, long tailed tits, blue tit, robin, great tit, coal tit, chaffinch, blackbird, sparrowhawk, buzzard and wren. It was very windy all day, so alot of birds were obviously sheltering as much as they could from both weather and shooting.

The second and last shoot will be on the morning of saturday 20th Sept. I definately will not be turning up before 12 noon!!!

Darell:t:

saturday 13th September

Not a great day for bird watching but the ducks didn't mind. Teal, mallard and tufties were outside the gullery hide when i arrived. The rain was almost horrizontal, the clouds very low and a steady breeze when i first got there.

Walking along to the swamp hide i saw blue tits, wren, great tits and chaffinch. From the hide there were mallard, a cormorant, heron, teal, mute swans with cygnets, moorhen, gadwall and a couple of wigeon.

I then headed for the east hide where i saw more mute swans, heron, cormorant, mallard, teal and moorhen. After a while several common gulls came in for a bath and chat before a pair of snipe did a fly past..practising for Leuchars.

Song thrush, blackbird, goldcrest, coal tit, robins, woodpigeons, rooks, jackdaws, crows and pheasants were also seen.

Just to remind you that next saturday is the second of two mornings when shooting will be taking place on the reserve for a few gentlemen who obviously do it for FUN!!!:C

Darell:t:

i was at kinnordy yesterday, beutifull weather but not much on the loch,mutes/coots/moorhens/mallards,swallows are still flying about and lapwings were circling,a jackdaw was inspecting the box on the trees the rooks nest in,the rooks were sitting above it,a cormorant flew past and i saw several butterflys, the trees are geting livelier but there is still loads of leaves on the trees making it harder to identify them,i checked the board in the gullery hide and it looks like it has been a quiet sept, any idea when the feeders are going up?
