A very pleasant couple of hours this afternoon.

I'd barely sat down when an Osprey was seen to take a fish at the east end and a Marsh Harrier hunting near the lone pine... didn't know where to look LOL.

The Osprey flew to the large pine near the old barn and sat there, but I didn't actually see it eating the fish. Then another Osprey spotted fishing.

For a while only the female MH was seen, then both of them, then only the male.

Lots of mobbing activity with the BH Gulls, and Lapwings.

A Wren was singing beside the hide and we could hear a woodpecker drumming (sounded like it was near the car park area).

Darell,

Seen both Marsh Harriers today at Kinnordy but thought the male might not be a full adult. A visit to the Tay reed beds on the way home got me another pair and the female seemed to be the tagged one that was hanging about Kinnordy a few weeks ago. Anyone know how many marsh harriers could be in the area generally or how territorial they are?

A superb couple of hours this afternoon.

I stopped at the west end to see what was around, Greylags with goslings, Lapwings buzzing, cattle contentedly chewing the cud. Then two things flew over and I thought... ummm... they be cranes! The landed in the ploughed field near the old barn, just behind the trees. Sent a text to Darrel but when I looked back they'd disappeared.

Apparently in that time, they'd flown across to the fields in front of the reserve, then headed east.

I do like self-found rarities:-O

Only saw the female Marsh Harrier today, but we had several visits from Ospreys - two seen in the air at one point. At least 2 successful in catching fish, one landed on the loch-side post with his catch.

I took loads of photos but haven't downloaded them yet - you might be lucky;)

That's great Delia. If you get a chance please post your crane sightings on the Angus forum so local birders know and can look out for them. Cheers.
Looking fwd to seeing the photos. :)

I had a visit today. Osprey flew over my head with a nice big fish as I walked along the path towards Kirrie.

Now I could be wrong but there appeared to be three Marsh Harriers today. Two smaller ones on the opposite side of the loch to the middle hide. One obviously a male going by the markings. Shortly after this the female turned up and kindly perched on a tree at the same spot. Appeared almost bright yellow around the head. A real treat for a novice birder like myself.

The other highlight was a male Blackcap at the carpark as I was eating my piece.

On telling Mrs Birder this later at home she suggested we could visit a week on Saturday when we both off. That doesn't happen very often.

I have had computer problems, hence no news from me for a while.

Lots of birds to see at Kinnordy just now, but i think the Ospreys and the marsh Harriers have been the stars of the reserve lately. With the ospreys its been a case of which one to follow....up to 5 birds at a time. the harriers have been in constant view so it has been great.

A couple sitting in the gullery hide were so busy watching the harriers to the left of the hide, they only heard the splash of the osprey hitting the water infront of them and then watched as he took the fish from the water....of course where was i with my camera at this time...along in the east hide watching it happen!!!

A great place to be just now with lots of the migrants back....only wish there werent so many leaves on the trees covering them all up lol
Lots of visitors around, what with the lovely weather we've been having so good.

I missed the cranes this time...not alot you can do when you get a text from Delia in the middle of teaching...sorry kids, just carry on with what you are doing...might not be back!!! I don't think so!!

Harrier photos from last week. the last one is the harrier chasing the osprey.

Osprey photos to follow.
