I arrived at 7 this morning and it was a bit more active than it was last week. Blue tits and Great tits were in the car park area along with siskins and chaffinches.
from the gullery hide it was quiet with only a few ducks around the edges of the bog bean. Over to the east i could see some wigeon, mallards and a few tufties. On the far side i saw two female goosanders flying to the back of the reserve while two shoveler flew into the gullery area.
herons, buzzards, crows, gadwall and lapwing were the next birds on my list for the day. I could hear bullfinches outside the hide so decided to go for a walk in the rain, along to the eastern edge of the reserve. It did stop raining on the way round and i added dunnock, wren, robin, blackbird, blackcap, pheasant, great spotted woodpecker and woodpigeon to my list. The white pheasant was in the field where it was earlier in the year, waiting for snow to blend in with the surroundings!!
Red squirrels were seen at various places while bullfinches and siskins were also present in good numbers. Pied Wagtail and meadow pipits were next on my list along with a single swallow which was passing through.
When i got back to the gullery area, Gus was there and he had seen Pochard from the gullery hide. We went to have a look for them but they had either moved on or were where we couldn't see them. 5 Snipe then did a fly past before Gus headed off. he was only away 5 mins when the juv Goshawk appeared over the willow scrub opposite the gullery hide. It made it way down one of the channels sending ducks and lapwing into the air. It then soared upwards, changing direction, giving great views of its underside and bars on the tail. My camera was in the car!!! It had been raining before i went for my walk and decided to leave it behind so it wouldn't get wet. Forgot to pick it up again on my way back!! Next time!! lol
A really good mornings bird watching with the Goshawk a bonus at the end. No sign of the harriers this morning and wonder if they have now headed south. With the weather like it was today, i don't blame them. 1st Whoopers of the winter at Vane farm yesterday and geese starting to arrive in numbers, i'l have to look out the thermals and gloves again very soon.

i had great views of a goldcrest on the fir tree in front of the gullery hide today, the bird started feeding high up but flew down to the lowest branch,i also had a very dark looking blackbird, before looking through my binos i thought it was a starling, from the tail to beak it was all dark coloured,i remembered darrels sighting (25/10/07)and it was sugested a migrant, first sighting for me,in the windy conditions the trees at the gullery hide were the most productive,1 beutifull male bullfinch/wren/robin/great tit/chaffinch/dunnock/blackbird/bluetit/1 red squirell ground feeding,on the water most birds were at the east end,mallards/tufted ducks/wigeon/swallow flying about/30+mutes.teals/4 shovelar ,a tagged marsh harrier has been recorded passing through

I will be up at kinnordy on sunday and plan to go for a walk round at about 10am if anyone wants to join me. Haven't been up for a couple of weeks so will be good to see what is around.

I arrived at 7.45 this morning and the reserve was alive with birds. Lots of blackbirds feasting on the elderberries around the car park/ gullery area. From the gullery hide i saw 6 shoveler infront of the hide along with mallard and a few teal. Over towards the east side there were wigeon, tufties and a single goosander. To the west, there were a few greylags in the stubble field and in amongst them were 12 pinkies. The clouds were really low and you couldn't see the hills at all, infact the houses along at the west end weren't visible either.
As the morning went along, the clouds lifted and bt the time i left it was nice and sunny but with quite a strong wind.
A single swallow caught my eye as it flew past the gullery hide looking for friends! Up above we could here a large skein of geese but couldn't see them for the clouds. I decided to go along to the swamp hide and on the way added robin, wren and dunnock to my list. Once at the hide it was gadwall who had taken up the immediate area infront of the hide along with mallards and wigeon. a couple of buzzard could be seen on the far side while the geese stayed feeding in the field.
Back at the gullery hide we noticed the mute swan numbers have increased over the past few weeks. Noticed that the bittern had been seen during the week but it didn't make its self visible to us while we were present.
We went along to the east hide and from there it was tufties, wigeon and more gadwall. 3 herons flew past while a large flock of lapwing appeared and flew around for quite a while before heading along to the swamp end.
Delia arrived so it was good to catch up with news while watching what was around.
We then went back to the gullery hide for a while before heading for home. on our way out of the reserve a song thrush had joined the blackbirds to feed on the elderberries while i did see a single male blackcap also filling its belly.
Lots of birds around with quite a few ducks returning. Whoopers can't be too far away now along with goldeneye etc.
Other birds seen today were Treecreeper, mistle thrush, siskin, bullfinch, long tailed tits, blue tit, reed bunting, crow, rook, pheasant, great tit and great spotted woodpecker.

Eeeh it was good to meet up with you again Darell - thanks for the craik.

It was wonderful watching the skeins of geese flying about, a highlight of autumn for me to see them all coming back.

Is the Merlin remaining as a 'not sure' then?

Walked out to the loch on the drain-edge path from Kirriemuir today, had several Jays, Goldcrests and Bullfinches on the way out.
At the hides I saw an immature Great Crested Grebe, an unusual bird on Kinnordy. Plenty wildfowl around; Mallard, Teal,Shoveller, Tufties, Gadwall, 100+ Wigeon , couple of Goosander and a female Goldeneye.
Lot of birds feeding on the Elderberries near the carpark including Song Thrush, Blackcap, more Bullfinch and lots of Blackbird.
Three Snipe were the only waders I saw but very little mud showing on the loch at present.
On the way back home we had Treecreeper, Long-tailed tit, Great-spotted Woodpecker, more Bullfinches and a couple of Redpoll near the wooden bridge.

For those regular visitors to this thread who hadn't already heard.

Some sad news was brought to us yesterday with the death of Ken Hall. He was a regular visitor to Kinnordy and will be missed for his friendship and enthusiasm for bird watching. He started the North East Scotland thread, had his own website and had taken lots of wonderful photographs over the years.
We will miss you Ken.

Found this at the top of a glen close to Kinnordy. Can anyone help with ID - Dodgy Buzzard or Rough Legged?

Sorry it is a poor picture due to lack of light and big crop. In flight looked very light and almost harrier like.

i had the male smew today(mon)first time i have see a male ,the bird was at the east hide in front of the osprey perch in the company of some goldeneyes, there were other watchers searching for it with binoculars, looking through binoculars at this distance the bird looked like a common gull in the rough water,i had my scope with me giving an excellent view of this striking bird,a large flock of common gulls landed nearby making it difficult to point out the smew, lots of birds on the water in the windy conditions, lots of mutes/5 whoopers, another 3 whoopers flew in then imediatly went to sleep,teals/1 cormorant/mallards/greylags/tufted ducks/wigeon/goldeneyes/a wren was singing just outside the east hide and bullfinches were calling nearby,2 all black blackbirds /chaffinch the usual tits /robin were in the trees,2 treecreepers were having a dispute right next to the boardwalk leading to the gullery hide,reedbuntings/jackdaws/heron/pinkfoots were also seen,a very large flock of fieldfares were groundfeeding in a field aproaching lintrathen
