A good session this afternoon. Marsha Harrier and Osprey showed their faces for us, and the Little Ringed Plover was still around, along with all the usual suspects.

Also, new for me at the reserve, were Jack Snipe and Garganey ..... both of these are 10 year ticks for me LOL.

I might have pictures of the Garganey, if I can work out how to download them from my new camera!!

Gosh... you did have a busy time tere Kawwauser.

I see the geese have goslings now... I took some pics of the adults on the 16th, but there was no sign of babies at that time, and they didn't even appear to be sitting on eggs. Very strange that.

This was the pair I saw on the 16th, at virtually the same spot as Kawwausers. Unless there's a youngster or two, or eggs, in that tiny hollow where his/her feet are?? I can't see any.

I didn't see any Greylags up the west end a couple of days before (Mallard and Whooper Swan only) and on the 2nd there was a single Greylag, so I suppose she could have been sitting on eggs out of sight that day.

I won't be able to get over for a week or so yet, as I'm off to Norfolk tomorrow... not been for years.

My first visit back since the end of April. The car park was very quiet, and the Gullery hid was empty when I got there.

No gulls on the islands, few birds around at all. However, I settled down and gradually things started to show themselves, and it ended being a very enjoyable visit.

Virtually the first thing to arrive was an Osprey who fished not too far away, and he actually caught something. For the very first time I've got a picture of one carrying a fish!! Later one a male Marsh Harrier flew past the barn and beyond the lone pine and was there joined by the female who flew up for a food pass. The Osprey (or others) paid three visits in the few hours I was there.

Swallows didn't appear to be nesting under the hide, but were making use of the kingfisher perch.

Sedge Warbler singing but not seen.... as with a Wren. Red Squirrel round the feeder. Gadwall, Mallard, Shoveler, Mute Swan, Greylag, Swifts, Swallows and Martins all seen.

No Wren picture yet then Delia ?

i was at kinnordy for a couple of hours this morning, driving in from the west end there was a large congregation of greylags with large juvs grazing in a patch near the road,i stopped intending on counting them but it was a bit dodgy parking here,i took some pics but they rapidly split into 3 groups ,I estimate there were about 30 juvs with them, this might be the most successful year they have had here, redshanks and oystercatchers were perched on the posts,at the swamp hide a lapwing and a redshank were feeding in front of the hide, sedge warblers/reedbuntings/willow warblers/great tits were close by,an osprey flew in and rapidly flew out,a carrion crow landed on the half submerged branch and walked along it until it was half submerged itself,a bemused pair of gadwall swam past directly behind it,at the gullery hide the female marsh harrier put in an appearance, it flew up and landed in the lone pine tree, the far side of the tree unfortunately,15 mins later it flew again landing back in the reeds rather than feeding, amazing bird,a water rail was very vocal to the right of the hide, although the bh gulls have again been wiped out one pair landed and began showing an interest ,a mute was being very aggressive to other mutes here,no cygnets seen, all four hirundines were flying but the stars are certainly the swallows which were constantly landing on the perch in front of the hide and calling, between the gullery hide and the lilly pond I came across a lot of the smaller birds/blue tits and great tits with youngsters, bullfinch/goldfinch/chaffinch/robins/willow warblers/1 chiff chaff/yellowhammers ,wrens were singing most of the way,one bird was nest building in vegetation just above the height of the water, herons /buzzards/pheasant and lssb gulls were also seen, there is evidence of recent activity from the beavers between the bridges, roe der and 1 hare were also seen

at backwater a male cuckoo was on the lines for over an hour calling and diving down ,a family of ravens was seen along with 1 jay skylark/linnet/common sandpiper/pied wagtail juvs/willow warblers, a kestrel was circling giving out an alarm call, it spotted prey on the ground and started hovering still giving the alarm calls ?

Managed my first visit for ages yesterday afternoon. pretty quite really, but apparently i missed a Marsh Harrier flypast... typical!

A couple of rather distant ospreys flew around a couple of times, possibly siblings? A large flock of Jackdaws flew over and another of Lapwings flying east.

Apart from some Mallards, nearly everything else was away over the far side.

I've never seen a Roe Deer come up right beside the hide!! A shame the Osprey wasn't closer, but quite pleased with what I can do with my new camera!!

Had to show one of the Highlanders too... sorry, but they were so close to the road, I couldn't resist!

Still very quiet on the water front, but at one point I had 3 Ospreys in my bins at the same time.... and they're not big ones LOL.

The female Marsh Harrier put on a show too; harrying the Osprey till he settled on ha post.

A Lesser Black-backed Gull was sitting on the right hand Osprey pole.

Spent a couple of hours here on Monday, good sightings of the female Marsh Harrier. Is there a Barn Owl in the nesting box on the far side ? kept seeing this little white apparition popping in and out but just too far for a positive idea.
Nothing too much more, Gadwall and Shoveller amongst the usual, this nice Jay on the feeders at Balgavie as well.

Jim.

Hi Jimmy.... missed you - I was there yesterday evening.

No sign of harriers for me though unfortunately (nor last Friday, so it's good to know they're still around). Gus is back from his foreign travels and popped in for a bit too.

Hmmmm.... I've kept an eye on that box but haven't see the barnie... yes, one does use it for roosting.

It's a shame the feeder on the way to the Gullery Hide isn't being kept filled, it was empty on Friday and again last night, I put a little in there.

For the first time ever, a Cormorant came into the bay in front of the hide. I've only ever seen them way over near or on the right hand Osprey perch before.

Still pretty quiet there really, but the Mallards and Teals seem to be coming out of hiding now. And there was a big flock of Lapwing.

Bittern being seen fairly regularly from the Gullery Hide.
Also a Jack Snipe spotted on the bogbean, other birds include Goldeneye, Gadwall, Shoveler, Wigeon and quite a lot of Teal.
Redwings around too, stripping berries from the trees.

I was looking the wrong way when the Bittern flew in to roost yesterday!!

Saw my first Whoopers of the season fly in - a group of 5 with one youngster. And two gorgeous Roe Deer right in front of the hide.

i was at kinnordy just before dinner time today,no sign of the bittern but there is a lot of birds about, there was a large flock of lapwings on the bogbean they were spooked twice and I estimate there was 300,not sure what spooked them the first time, there was also quite a few teals and some greylags,2 shovelers were to the left,a couple of moorhens some mallards and tufted ducks were also there,a buzzard was perched on top of the tree with the nestbox in and 3 pheasants were perched beneath it,woodpigeons/rooks/carrion crows/jackdaws were flying about, and a single common gull landed,2 herons flew past together,a pair of gadwall were at the swamp hide end,the trees between the gullery hide and east hide were very active,a noisy flock of 7 redwings were making there way along the trees, other birds here were treecreeper/goldcrest/coal tits/blue tits/robin/chaffinch,a small flock of bullfinches kept crossing the path, when I entered the east hide I met up with alex shepherd and olive, they told me a flock of golden plovers had just flew past, not long after sitting down a cracking peregrine glided past right in front of the hide spooking all the lapwings for a second time,in front of the hide was goldeneyes/wigeons/cormorants/mutes/(no sign of whoopers)s single duck caught my attention siiting all on its own on the far side,it was too far to id by binoculars so I had to zoom up with my camera to get an id,1 sleeping female smew,i don't recall any smews being reported in angus last year ,there is also another female at balgavies,

approx. 400 Canada geese at lintrathen

backwater
7 redwings groundfeeding on the slopes of the reservoir,1 stonechat/20 bullfinches/goldfinches/pied wagtails/robin/song thrush/4 Canada geese/wren /buzzard

Egret at Swamp Hide ?

Yesterday (Sunday) had brilliant conditions, and we had a clear, if distant view of the female Smew. Swamp Hide was very quiet, but a large egret stepped out of the far reeds and paraded up and down the bank. There was some discussion amongst the small group of 'amateurs' whether it was a Cattle Egret, but I wondered if it was a Great White Egret. We left before experts arrived. Help please.
