Hi gray38, There has been a couple of Buzzards sitting on the telegraph poles by the Haden Tunnel over the last few months. They seem to be there each time I go down there.

Had a couple of hours at Swallow Moss on Sunday, The weather was so bad I didn't get out of the car. I saw the Hen Harrier male for about a minute then a Merlin diving about with a couple of Crows plus a 1000 or more Starlings with a dozen Fieldfares in with them. Apart from that nothing else turned up.

Back to the grind for me now, after my trip to India. Oh well.

Whilst on the way to work this morning a Raven flew over Knypersley. Over the cricket club and Biddulph Victoria FC.

You did really well at Swallow Moss Jim. It can get a bit bleak up there at this time of year though!

I hope you had a nice time in India, I spent a few years there when my old man was in the RAF in the 1940's. As for Swallow Moss I wouldn't want to be out on them moors in that weather. It's scary when it that rough.

I was visiting friends in Biddulph last night: as we were parking the car at about 7pm, I could hear a small group of Pink-footed Geese flying over. Probably no more than 20, though obviously impossible to know in the dark!

I guess this might be notable for the area?

Very quiet in and around an ice bound Rudyard, however we still had a first for us our little patch.
Why do we seem to get so many grey dull days around Staffs Moorlands ?
Tina was quick to spot a dipper on the stream that runs south towards Leek
by the old railway bridge, which we have never seen in the area before.
This was soon joined by a Kingfisher.
Apart from the usual array of grey herons, tits and finches we saw:
Dipper
Kingfisher
Bullfinch(fem)
Goldcrest
Tawny Owl
Sorry about the quality of pics but the light was terrible at 2pm.
Merry Christmas everyone.
Mick & Tina

Blithfield is well worth a visit at the moment. From the causeway there is a Slavonian Grebe (from the west end looking towards Blithe Bay) and a Black Redstart (from the east end). Also a Red-Throated Diver at the dam.

Set off to day for Rudyard, in the hope of doing some digi scoping, however the scene from the top of Hills Lane, was disapointing since Rudyard was shrouded in mist at noon .
The ponds were are frozen over, so no Ducks.
A couple of unusual tits flitted amongst some feeders along with finches and LTTits, we put them down as our first pair of Marsh Tits on the patch.
Birds seen :
Good flocks of Redwing and Fieldfare
Jay
Marsh Tit
Bullfinch
Reed Bunting
Kestrel
Tawny Owl
+ usual tits and finches
Seasons greetings
Mick
