Birding In Staffordshire (29 Viewers)

Popped over to Utch this afternoon, never been before so just kept to the main public footpath which takes you accross the field by the roundabout. Lot's about with Buzzards, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and almost certain I saw the Hobby as well. Grey wagtial on the river, Chiff chaff, wren, Greenshank, Cormorants, Pintail, there was another small duck on it's own on the larger pool after where the muddy pipe runs in. Not sure what it was though. I also watched a flock of small birds right over the far side of the main gravel pit, there were at least 40/50 of them rising up and swirling in the air then dropping down again, not sure what these were either as I only had my bins and camera and the birds were half a mile away. Lot's of Dragonflies about on and near to the first pool. Black tip chasers, common darters, southern and migrant hawkers. Butterflies seen were Peacock, Painted lady, Large white, Speckled wood and Red admiral. Not a bad couple of hours. Loads of finches and tits in the garden, numbers are building weekly. 25+ goldfinches about 1 hour ago, mainly juvs.

Cracking Grey wagtail pic :t:

Nice one Russell :t: When was the last record of Barn Owl for the hill??! I don't recall any records for at least the last 5 years.

Steve

Not aware of any records in the last 20 years or so.
We have it recorded on the site list which refers to birds living in a barn (farm no longer exists). The farmer who farmed Berryhill lives next door to me.

An even more excellent patch record then :t: :t:

I take it that this bird wasn't of the dark-breasted form (unlikely I know!)??!

Hi, dont spose anyone knows anything about the supposed glossy ibis in newport, shropshire? its just that i live in newport, so any info would be gladly appreciated.

Tawny Owl perched on an ariel in next doors backgarden last night. It then flew to the field at the back. Then I heard the calls of two Tawny's close by.

The House martins are still using the nest under the eaves and I can still hear the young quietly chiruping away.

Only what it said on BirdGuides - 10 to 15 birds flying west over the A41, seen from a moving vehicle just south of Newport...make of that what you will!

Steve

cheers, dont suppose theres any chance of seeing them then, but will pop to the local marsh just incase 1 decides to stop, if they were glossy ibis

Red Kite over Trentham as i write this message,
2.20pm, viewed from Churchill Avenue heading north towards radial park. (one for you radial rob!)

had a bloke at work say he had seen a parrot twice today, once being mobbed by a black headed gull, the second time being mobbed by a crow. i didn't get chance by the end of the day to go and see it, he said it was green, so im hoping ring reck parakeet, but could be a number of things.

if anyone wants to check it out to see what it might have been, it was opposite the steelite international building along the canal, from westport head back towards the entrance, turn right down the canal, carry on until you go past a pub and under the road. its the big building on the other side with the red windows. its also worth pointing out it has over 20 (young) rowan trees on site, i would expect a few thrushes on there over winter.

Curious you should mention Rowan, Adam. I'm sizing up local trees, ready for hopefully a winter influx of you-know-whats!

Hi Adam,
There was alot of talk a while ago about parakeets in Bradwell so perhaps a few remained. I once heard they had taken up residence in Hartshill Park too

Cheers
