Birding In Staffordshire (1 Viewer)

Sand Martins (Part 2)

Well Nick 'Statto' Smith has sent me his Sand Martin records from Westport for the last four years, his sightings are for 2009 to 2012 and upto the 12th May for each year from the first sighting of the year.

2009 = 23 sightings

2010 = 244 sightings

2011 = 166 sightings

2012 = 25 sightings

So slightly up on 2009 but well down on the previous two years.

Cheers Nick

Hi

Popped along to Coombes this morning with Gemma who came along for a ride on my back.

Walking down to the river we picked up
Blackcap
Willow Warbler
Garden Warbler
Chaffinch
Blue Tit
Around the River/Bridge
Pied Flycather both male and female
Pond Area
Willow Warbler
Pied Flycatcher
Woodcock Walk (very muddy)
Tree Pipit
Tree Creeper

Was told I had missed a Redstart by the pond by 15 minutes.

Tim.

Talking of a funny old spring on the rare/scarce thread. Personally, away from Uttoxeter Quarry and Blithfield, I think Sand Martins have been very thin on the ground this year so far.

It's taken until this week to see any in the Cheadle area, which is ridiculous really considering I've seen Swallows and House Martins before them, and by weeks. And Swift by a week. Anyone else thinking the same?

saw my first sand martin of the year in the alton area on the 8th of may not seen one since and a single house martin yesterday

Report of tree pipit along the woodcock trail at Coombes, as well as a grasshopper warbler by Clough Meadow Cottage.

Adam

Hi Adam

On Saturday the Tree Pipit was showing really quite well just as you start to climb up the bank away from the river on the Woodcock trail.

Tim.

I've yet to see it!! I should be there on Thursday or Friday this week though. Hoping it has taken up residence in one of the coppice plots we cleared this winter, would be a nice reward for the hard work the team put in chainsawing. I'm hoping for a few more things along these rides, mainly butterflies and moths, but good to know they are offering a home to the intended bird species too.

Cheers Steve, will do, noticed in the book you'd logged em. I dont get up there enough really but took a day of work and all turned out pretty well. Osprey came
over and all hell broke loose with oystercatchers, lapwings and corvids making sure it didn't hang around, headed of to the west. Hoped to pick it up again on main lake but no sign. :t:

Lots of swifts overhead as I was working in Endon today, great to hear their high pithced calls as they went over. A walk this afternoon with my Son who I have nicknamed Hawkeye, as he never misses anything produced a nice Tawny Owl family, the look on his face when he found them was priceless. Sprawk was on my fence yesterday.

Cheers Keith but i think George and Steve oz should take a lot of the credit for the boxes buddy:t: they have built and put quite a few up now at the upper Blythe Valley i have just helped out , but we do still have a long way to go to reach our target up there ,but it is really satisfying when walking around and you see the birds using the boxes what we have made, and nah not posh buddy lol col
