I've also searched the regular haunts of the little Owl in this area,once having 5 birds now glaringly absent.........

River Sow Meadows, Stafford

Calm & overcast on the local this morn......

Highlights:

Green Sandpiper x 1...by the river, for once not at the Water Works.
Skylark x 20
Swallow x 2
Chiffchaff x 1
Stonechat x one pair.....very pleasing as this is the first observation of 'em on the patch since Nov 09. (winter regular before then)Hopefully the numbers are building again after the harsh 2009/10 & 2010/11 winters.
Redwing x 15...always more skittish after just arriving in. (one week later than last year)
Goldcrest x 2...with Tit flock.
Treecreeper x 1 "
G S Woodie x 5
Little Grebe x 2
Jay x 3....busy acorn collecting!

Caverswall Marsh
the Blithe flooded the marsh overnight, the teal count rose to 25,with lapwing numbers at 27.snipe were harder to spot with only one seen. this evening Short eared owl again hunting the marsh. If you visit the marsh please stay on pathways, do not walk through the marsh thanks,

Driving home via Whitemoor Haye and there was a large amount of big gulls in the field by the Sittles Farm so as soon as I was home I was in my car and back down for a quick look before dusk where there were large groups of gulls in the fields either side of the bend in the rough track. At a rough guess I would have said there were around 2500+ Lesser Black-backed Gulls with around 100 Black Headed Gulls within them and these are conservative figures. I was present way past dusk with the gulls heading towards the far pool.

Birding in Staffordshire

Its been a while since I was last on here but hey the threads still going with 1,039,784 viewings and 13,795 posts:eek!: My last pc crashed big time many months ago and now I have a new one and a new Broadband provider. It was kinda nice to take a break from the internet. It looks like the thread has slowed down a bit and a few folk have moved on for a range of reasons. That happens on Birdforum but maybe now is the time to fix that and get it up to speed once again. There's no reason why this should not happen.

At least on this site we can chat, share bird information, sightings and a few photo's along the way, even pm each other and importantly bring together the Staffordshire birding community and its birding spirit. It would be great if we could also get a few more sightings and reports from South Staffordshire.

Caverswall scrape
A Merlin went over also a Kestrel and a Sparrowhawk were about 2 Teal were on the scrape also 37 BH Gulls were counted also 2 LBB Gulls, 1 Common snipe, 18 Pied Wagtail, 20 + Meadow pipits 2 Reed Buntings . Some big flocks of Redwings were on the move with around 150+ birds seen just 1 Fieldfare went over and lot's of Blackbirds were about , col

Whittington (Lichfield) this afternoon

Hi All
Walked the top footpath above the village this afternoon, from the Barracks end to Hademore Farm and back along the canal towpath.
Red-legged Partridge ... group of nine behind the small gas-plant by the horse paddocks
Mistle Thrush ... four feeding alongside the strawberry field nearest the canal close to Hademore Bridge
Kingfisher ... single bird flew past me as I walked back along the towpath, before playing hide-and-seek in the waterside willows. Digiscoped shot attached, taken in poor light.
But no Fieldfare or Redwing to be seen anywhere.

Large mixed flock of redpoll and siskin at the Leek end of the Cauldon Canal yesterday afternoon.

Agree with all above... I see jays on every walk this year.

Fieldfare

From all the reports it seems that there has been a good movement of Fieldfare across Staffordshire today. I saw my first Fieldfare of the season up on the moors late this afternoon. Its always a good feeling when you see them back again and I always think of the journey they have made to get here.

70 redwings today,i have noticed this autumn the lack of large finch flocks in the dimmingsdale-churnet valley area,most of the siskins,redpolls and bramblings have been in just ones and twos.

saw around 30 fieldfare over where i live today, there calls giving them away, 80+ redwing yesterday whilst at work, heard them first to, nice to hear & see them again,hopefully waxwing later

Silverdale

I know this is rather late, but on Sunday Gemma and me had a wander around the former colliery. Nothing too exciting but had a nice Grey Wagtail tail on show, didn't like the Meadow Pipit getting too close to where it was feeding though.
