Oh well still learning

At least I now know

EDIT:
maybe I should have started my reply with "is this the....."
Rather than the "This is the ....."

I would have had all angles covered then
LOL

Westport Lake sightings - 4th August

A Common Tern flew thru this morning plus the two Pochard are still present. Mid morning and the juv Med Gull was seen again.

PS Nick - I've asked myself why many times!

Berryhill afternoon today

Whinchat still showing well in the Shrike corner paddock which makes a change as they have been elusive of late.3 Wheatears and 3 Redstarts nearby.

The Ring reading section of the WPLBird Club met today and the juv Med Gull currently occasionally visiting the lake was rung in Belgium. They are only two numbers missing now so we should get a result soon.

Birding On The Edge
Above The Churnet Valley

Went for a walk on farmland above the Churnet Valley this evening with Terry Eyre. Saw 6 Linnets including 2 Juveniles, 2 Green Finches, 2 Gold Finches and a good number of crows coming in to roost. Also saw a Juvenile Barn Owl at an undisclosed location.

A good number of Black Headed Gulls and Lesser Black Backed Gulls were making there way towards Croxden Quarry coming up out of the Churnet Valley from the direction of Alton (obviously following the River Churnet).

Berryhill etc

No sign of Whinchat or Wheatear on my route today but three Redstart in the hawthorns around lower paddocks and two juvi Stonechat SE end of "LapBunt" paddock. Goldfinch really building in numbers with one big flock of well over 100 in the lower paddocks: a sight well worth enduring the miserable late-morning conditions for!

Stanley Pool yesterday: usual suspects plus two new site birds (for me), Reed Bunting (!) and Green Sandpiper.

Let us know when you get the result W - it will be interesting to know where it originated from. :t:

Nice one with the Green Sandpiper site tick Andy, lets hope for some more wader site ticks at Stanley.
Had a look round Berryhill in the drizzle early afternoon, the Whinchat still showing around the paddock on the Shrike corner, although no sign of the Wheatears at the viewpoint paddocks. In addition to the large Goldfinch flocks in the lower paddocks theres also big flocks up around the viewpoint, could be well over 200 birds present with good numbers of juveniles.Had about 55 Linnets, again with plenty of juvs.

Birding On The Edge
On my way home this evening I saw 48 Starlings in a field approaching Ipstones Edge. A huge number of crows flew south west over my house this evening heading to a roosting site. Amazing watching them aproaching from the Churnet Valley area and north east flying over.

Bird movement is definately picking up in these parts.

New BF Members/Posts

Hi all,

A few weeks ago a BF member put a posting on here about sightings they had when out on a birding walk. The person concerned at a later point deleted their post which was a shame because it was a post of interest.

The BF member deleted after comparing their sightings with other members sightings on here and did not think their sightings were worthy.

I think it is important that for the future any BF members new to the thread should be encouraged, welcomed and acknowledeged with their reports/sightings and I hope they will not find reason to be discourgaged in any way or for any reason.

For me all sightings posted here are of value whether common species or the odd species rarity that happens to find its way to the patch.

In the future we may/will attract new people to the thread and in some cases people new to birding from anywhere around the Staffordshire Moorlands/North Staffs region or beyond so I hope we can acknowledge/support them when they report sightings or indeed if they ask for advice.

I just thought I'd raise this issue as I was a little concerned when I learned of the deletion of post and the reason. It was a really good posting as well and I wanted to respond to it.

I totally agree with all the points you have raised here Dean. This thread was started to post any birdwatching experience in North Staffs and I hope the person concerned will continue posting on here.
