Forgot to mention there was a juv Black Tern at Knypersley this afternoon. This is Mr Knypersley's (aka Ged) 100th species of the year - and beat me to the ton again. The Teal at Westport today was my 98th species there this year. Congrats again to Ged on doing a ton at Knypersley again.

That is pretty amazing considering that Knypersley isn't on a flight line or along a valley, or has good coverage like Westport.

Speaking to Russell up at Berry Hill (the city's premier site for passerine migration ;) ) the other day, he reckons we've just recorded over 100 species this year up there too! Here's hoping that Sept and Oct deliver a few more ticks.

Cheers
Steve

Uttox Quarry

A rain sodden walk produced 3 yellow wags, 2 common sands, 1 green sand, 2 shelduck, sand marts, 6 teal, 2 cormorants and a little grebe. The main pits are being pumped out again - into the R. Tean pit. :C

Interesting! I don't know whether it will be there in the morning but if it is am I looking for an adult bird? Is it obviously distinctive from the BH gulls that are there?

Thanks for the texts Nick and Andy. That's always the danger of visiting family over the weekend!

Three hours later (I was coming home anyway!), cracking views this evening as the bird landed on the edge of the boating lake. Good to meet Sylvia Staffs as well :t:

Westport Lake sightings - 31st August

First sign of Autumn this morning with two Mipits flying over.

Then i left at 07-45hrs and headed home. I then went to Waterworld until about 11-45hrs. After getting changed, i checked my phone and then all holy hell broke out.

I had already received a text from Pete saying he'd had a Sedge Warbler. DK decided to pop down and see if he could find the Sedge. He then had a glimpse of a 'Little Gull' sort flying past on the main lake.

And thats how the juv Sabine's Gull was found this morning. I eventually arrived at about 12-00hrs. We reckon there have been about 170 birders there today and the Sab's was still present at 18-45hrs. There was only one bhg on the main lake left so it will be interesting to see if it is still there tomorrow. Also there were 12 Common Terns thru today.

This is the 8th record of Sabine's Gull in Staffs, first since 2001 and the first for Westport, possibly 206th species to be recorded there. So for the second time this year, Stoke-on-Trent has made the South Staffs boys head north!

Hey up Nick.
Not much change at Utch this evening, apart from 7 Green Sand's, 1 juv' Lrp and a Wheatear. I had hoped for a tern or good wader but once again left feeling discumnocerated!!!

Cheers

Andy.

The 2006 WMBC i think will be out later this year so that record will appear in there. I've used only the records i have at hand but i do stand corrected.
