Berry Hill

A bit of a fall of wheatears this morning, at least 8 and a whinchat in the Shrike paddocks and 4 with the 2 whinchats in the "heath" area by the travellers camp. Also a snipe near the Lap Bunt paddock.

I left Russell checking them out as I had to dash off to work, so hopefully there will be a few more to add.

Forget Berryhill, Westport is where its at!!!!!;)

A great bird from a top site, good one Westport! - looks like Berryhill sure has some catching up to do ... but who knows, there's every chance it'll have wrestled the crown back by the end of the Autumn! Nothing doing yesterday for me though though: Green Woodpecker best I could do in two visits, couldn't even manage a chat/redstart/wheatear although two Whinchats reported in the middle of the site, plus rumours of a few falcons various seen by Russell.

Wheatear today at Stanley Pool looks like a new bird for the site (unless there's an old record somewhere Nick?) but zero waders, and a few WillowW and chiffs. Goldfinch everywhere at the moment - seems a really good year for them.

Passage noticeable too at Black Bank lunchtime with 2 whinchats on the fence btwn the Void and Black Bank fields and 7 wheatears feeding :eek!: in the newly mown B. Bank fields. Gives some hope that we'll see some passage birds through here this autumn as well as the capital of Potteries birding ;)

2 YLG's on the Void, 15 herring gulls, loads of BHG and LBBG but I got rained out so didn't do a full scan.

Unable to emulate the feats of Westport but Greenshank, Common Sandpiper & Wigeon today. Kingfisher & Shoveler yesterday.

A few Ospreys have passed through recently with fairly regular sightings of hobby according to the log in the hide.

A up Andy

its definetly the Westport bird as i did'nt see the 96 Blithers but i did see the 95 bird ;) Which by the way was the 400th bird for an exiled Stoke Birder who now lives in Norfolk ;) which was quite surprising as he has an excellent record for finding mega's and is very sharp in the field even though he supoorts the 2nd potteries team ;) I think he sometimes lurks on BF :t:

Up The Vale!!!!!:king:

Birding On The Edge
80 goldfinches feeding on thistles 100 siskins and 20 linnets feeding on birch seeds also green woodpecker buzzard grey wagtail and 2 spotted flycatchers seen in walk near river churnet and ramblers retreat this afternoon, looks like its been a good breeding season for finches.

Hi Terry just been catchig up with the thread. Thanks for the report on your sightings.

I had a really good afternoon on Saturday at Brandon Marsh in Warwickshire with butterflies, dragonflies, 2 Kingfishers, Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers in the same dead tree. Particularly enjoyed good views of two a Spotted Flycatcher perched and preening and later flycatching. Also saw a Reed Warbler and a couple of Black Caps, Heron, Lapwing, 2 Green Sandpipers and a pair of Jays. The sun came out as well which was nice at the end of the day across the marsh.

Thanks Keith to for your reported sightings down at the Dimmingsdale feeding station. Its really taking off!!

I noticed we're nearing the 2000 mark. The first 1000 posts took about 1.5 years, the second 2000 looks like being just over 4 months - nice work everyone and congrats again for setting it up Dean :t:

Moorlands Macro: Close up and personal....with bug
Just got back from Dimmingsdale. Plenty of action on the feeders, Coal, Great and Blue tits, Nuthatch, GSWoodpecker, Chaffinch, Robin and a Kestrel in the tall tree to the left.

Called in at Freehay lane (the one that,s blocked off now, there is a beutiful bridle path that runs through the trees). Saw Siskin, LT Tits (about 16/20) Coal tit, chaffinch, robin, Buzzard and GSWoodpecker.

Also plenty of Fungi about if anyone is interested, not sure what species/type they are but there are at least 6 different types. Got some good macro shots of them.

Westport Lake sightings - 2nd September

Another excellent day at the City's premier birding hot spot. Before i arrived, three Oystercatchers were on the beach before being flushed. I had a female Teal on the main lake, and later, the mid morning boys had a Swift over and a Lesser Whitethroat.
Yesterday, another single Common Tern flew thru.

The Void, Silverdale Colliery

An Osprey this afternoon was a great sight on the patch! It caught a fish on its second dive, then gained height out of the Void and drifted off low to the north west with its fish supper!

A patch tick for me, and only the 3rd (?) site record I think. The first record (found by Mr Pomiankowski :t: ) hung around for a couple of weeks as I recall, so let's hope this bird does the same.

Cheers
Steve
