What's the status of breeding Goosander in Worcs? Today I saw a female Goosander with 9 chicks on the river Severn at Bewdley. They were moving fast with the current past the Rowing Club until lost from view under the main road bridge in Bewdley.

Cheers Hughie King.

Ps. Lots of Pearl bordered Fritillaries on the wing in the Wyre today.

Hi Hughie - I know the old man had a fruitless wander around Hurst Coppice and along the pipeline in the Wyre today searching for Fritillaries, where about were yours?

Cheers,

Greg

Hi Greg.

Had at least 8 along the old railway track about 200 yds past John Robinsons house. The cutting opens up by an information board at a crossroads with a way marker pointing to Dowles Brook one way and the visitors centre the other. They were spread out for the next 100yds on the right leading to an obvious Silver Birch.
Fair number of Wood Warblers as well.

Cheers Hughie.

Forgot to say I started from the Dry Mill Lane car park.

Did you see/hear any Redstarts and Pied Fly's down there?

Hi Steve.

No sign of any Pied Flys. Heard Redstart by Coopers Mill but did not see. On a circular walk along Dowles and back along the old railway counted 7 singing Wood Warblers. Numerous Blackcaps & 2 Garden Warblers. No Tree Pipits seen opposite the sculptured bench on the old railway track. No Dippers, 2 Grey Wags, Green & Gt Spotted Woodpeckers, 2 Song Thrush and a Coal Tit.

Cheers Hughie.

Hi all,
Would anyone be able to tell me any good sites for roding Woodcock. Its a bird Im yet to see andI feel like they must be some good local spots to find them roding. Maybe ravenshill or a spot in the wyre forest?
Any help or tips or anything is much appreciated!
Thank you!

It's only Rock and Roller but I like it
I have had roding birds along the old railway track in the Wyre Forest - the first large cleared area on the left seemed to be the favoured spot.

On Friday I had my first Spotted Flycatcher of the year in the quite surprising surrounds of Burlish Top, near Stourport-On-Severn.

Needless to say there was no sign at lunchtime today so presumably a passage bird.

Good little nature reserve this, with plenty to see at this time of year.

Most likely a passage bird Greg. There were big movements of Spot Flys on this weekend with 800+ recorded at Portland Bill

I note the BBRC have rejected the record of Iberian Chiffchaff from Malvern
Are you surprised? - it was never a serious contender as far as I and other observers were concerned- the call and song were both wrong and the appearance in the field wasn't promising either.

Not at all mate - based on the comments in the field from the likes of yourself, Brian and Andy W I stayed in Brum

Brian - what was the outcome of the Nutcracker report?

Not formally submitted as far as I know. Based on the verbal description I had there was no mention of the white vent, so it was a non-starter really. They were adamant it wasn't a Starling though......

Had a nice family group of Spotted Fly today locally, unfortunately in a private wood, so cannot disclose location, but worth keeping an eye out for the species at the moment if you are bimbling about B :)
