Worcestershire Birding Thread

It strikes me that this thread is very under-used and I am a good example of this !. In the absence of Brian's service, which now only provides headline updates via the web-site and Twitter when Brian is available, this thread would seem to offer a good site to bring birders up to date with birds in locations other than the well watched sites i.e. Upton and Grimley. The thread seems to me ideal for the posting of bird movements, arrival and departure dates and for the less common species in Worcestershire. I am aware that since the demise of Brian's service, many birders feel that it is a waste of time posting records of scarce migrants, this seems a real pity plus the non-reporting of such birds will not in my opinion, stimulate bird watchers to go out and find their own birds. At present there are vestiges of the old grapevine coming back into play which is fine, but not a real substitute for a more general broadcasting of news/interesting sitings. As smart phones are now becoming the norm accessing this thread and being able to update it from the field makes the use of this thread an extremely useful resource. However,it needs all Worcestershire readers of the Forum to make the effort to contribute to and use this thread. What do others think?

Seems to me that you have hit the nail on the head for this whole website/forum. Not just this thread. What better way to get birders out there ticking off those birds each year, than all of ours eyes and ears helping each other out.

This also helps those beginners that like myself are not sure what all the birds are yet, it gives us an idea of the sorts of birds we might find on different patches so when we research them, we can be more accurate with correct findings. A big WIN WIN all around I think.

Together we help each other and help keep a track of where birds are regularly being found. I am sure the likes of the RSPB and other bird tracking societies will read these forums to see what others are finding out there.

Definitely Richard, County wide movements and weather related movements are often missed from the headlines these indicators often lead to picking up real rarities, sharing sightings from Worcestershire as a whole is just the start of this process.

It's only Rock and Roller but I like it
Andy Warr had a probable White-rumped Sandpiper or Baird’s Sandpiper at Bredon's Hardwick main pit late afternoon today - distant on mud at south end but then flushed by a fisherman and flew off west with Lapwings and didnt return - well worth keeping an eye out for! :t:

Red-necked Grebe at Westwood Pool

A Red-necked Grebe was found at Westwood Pool by Wayne Dutton this morning. This has become a rare bird in the county and is the first record since 2008.

If the bird is still present access will be available from 5pm today: access off Westwood Way along main drive and turn left through pool entrance gate to car park; please follow on-site instructions.

Updates will be available via the details below.

Has anyone heard or got any info on the Hoopoe thats been reported from Stourport? Noticed it this morning on birdguides with a question mark. Apparently in a garden for a second day today.
