Hi Mike, Sounds like some information in that book is seriously out of date because the HQ at Zurqui was turned into a police traffic outpost more than 10 years ago. This was such a shame because there used to be an excellent trail there with great cloud forest birding just 20 minutes from San Jose. I checked that trail last year and it has almost entirely eroded away! There used to also be fantastic trails near the bridge over the Rio Sucio but those have also been abandoned. Instead, park management has focused on extending and ¨improving¨ trails the HQ at Quebrada Gonzalez. When they put in more buildings for the rangers, that took out a tree used by Black crested Coquette and Green Thorntail and apparently removed just enough vegetation to prevent mixed flocks from coming into some trees in the parking lot for good views at Cinnamon Woodpecker, Green Shrike Vireo, etc. These birds are still there but are just not as easy to see. There has been talk of putting in a two story structure for better looks into the canopy- I sure hope that happens! In any case, the station is easy to get to- on route 32, just 4 ks after the bridge over the Rio Sucio (big bridge where 2 rivers meet), on the right hand side of the road. Any bus to Guapiles can drop you of at the entrance and it takes 45-50 minutes to drive there from San Jose (which makes it the closest, high quality rainforest to San Jose). The station is near the northern limit of the park along highway 32 (not too far from the Aerial Tram).
