I have never heard of any robberies there but the car (and belongings) would be safest up at the top of the parking area near the ranger buildings. Better yet (and no risk of having anything taken from the car), you should consider doing it as a day trip while staying at Selva Verde. This will give you a much better chance at foothill specialties and deep forest birds you might not find elsewhere because a short stop often results in few birds. The place is often challenging to bird because the canopy is pretty high and the vegetation quite dense.However, patiently birding the forest in the morning until 9, watching for raptors in the parking area until about 11 and then heading back into the forest until noon is a good strategy for this site. Then after lunch, head back into the forest and do the same trail again- I almost always see species not seen during the morning.</blockquote>
