Birds fae Torry (5 Viewers)

I had a walk around St Fittick's this morning. It seemed quiet as I walked from the Concrete Bridge to the Railway Bridge. Herring Gull were present on roof of the Water Treatment Works, along with 2 Oystercatcher.

After I headed toward the Church I heard Common Whitethroat calling, then saw one carrying food. Three Rook were on the grassy slope, with 10 House Martin flying around, and a Barn Swallow perched on a post nearby.

There were more then 20 Goldfinch. Other sightings included: Reed Bunting, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Long-tailed Tit, and Greenfinch.

At Greyhope Bay there wasn't much to see. I was there on Friday when I saw 10 Sandwich Tern, 4 Sandpiper, 3 Common Ringed Plover, 14 Ruddy Turnstone, 2 Curlew, 2 Sedge Warbler, 4 Barn Swallow, 8 Sand Martin, plus 7 Goosander at Inner Breakwater.

Highlight of the day was the pod of about 10 Orca which were moving North from off Findon.

Regular readers will be pleased to hear that their normal 'Birds fae Torry' service will now be resuming. I had a wander this evening in quite pleasant, calm conditions. There were reasonable numbers of birds around, although perhaps not as much as might be expected for the time of year. 68 Goosander and 317 Eiders were loafing in moult. Waders included a Dunlin and 42 Turnstones. Things were mostly quiet offshore, and there was a notable lack of auks and Kittiwakes. An Arctic Skua did some tern-chasing exercises and three Manx Shearwaters and 18 Common Scoters went north. There were good numbers of Common Terns about, but otherwise the numbers were lacking. 59 Swifts were over Torry at dusk.

Great to have you back,Andrew.I'm working extra hours for holiday cover,so have not been getting down.

I got out fairly early this morning for a good look around. Things were generally a bit quiet, with not much happening on the sea or the shoreline. I had a look around St Fittick's and there was a reasonable amount of activity, with quite a few Willow Warblers and Sedge Warblers showing. Hopefully, they've had a good breeding season. A few butterflies were on the wing, including a Speckled Wood and an immaculate Dark Green Fritillary along the north side of the headland. 68 Goosanders were in the harbour.

Sadly no household items over recent days. I had a look around yesterday (4th) but it was slow going in fairly windy conditions. 87 Goosanders were in the harbour.

Late afternoon today was better, with more wader movement. A Whimbrel flew south and another was on the rocks in Greyhope Bay. There were two lovely summer plumage Knot. 60 Common Terns and two Arctic Terns were also in Greyhope Bay. A Greenshank was calling around the harbour but I didn't see it until it flew south over the allotments. It was my first of the year.

I went to Greyhope Bay this afternoon. Didn't see the Little Gull which was reported yesterday. There were lots of juvenile Herring Gull though. Other sightings included: 4 Dunlin, 3 Red Knot, 49 Common Tern, 3 Sandwich Tern, 15 Common Ringed Plover, 36 Ruddy Turnstone, 34 Goosander, 290 Common Eider, Black-headed Gull, 2 Great Black-backed Gull, and 40 Kittiwake.

The Goosander were in the harbour as were some of the Eider.

I also was there briefly on Sunday, when I heard a Whimbrel.

I came home from work at 9pm last night and there must have been close to 100 Swifts together, flying above Balnagask Road.Easily the largest amount of Swifts I have seen together and with them all screaming,It was fantastic to watch.
Popped out this evening to do a count and got to 85. Last year, the highest count (109) was on 2nd August, although I had another count over 100 on 9th. There's maybe a chance the numbers could still build up, particularly as a cool summer might have delayed fledging.

I had a look around late afternoon before the rain arrived. It was somewhat interesting with a little bit of movement going on. A good selection of waders included five Dunlin, five Sanderling and 11 Knot. A female Tufted Duck looked a bit out of place among the 81 Goosander. 70 Common Terns and three Arctic Terns were gathered in Greyhope Bay. Offshore things were quiet, although auks had increased from a handful to a few dozen. The best bird was an adult Little Gull going south. A Grey Wagtail along the north shore was my first of the autumn.
