GW, me thinks your right with one of your last two as there does seem to be slight reddish tones

you know what? In the field I IDd this bird as Sardinian Warbler but this range of answers got me thinking.......is it something else?

a female Sardinian it could potentially be, but I'd expect a slightly greyer cap/nape, and more buffy/ornagey flanks than this bird shows. Depends also on what you saw of it's front. A male has similar flanks, but you would see the stonking black cap on him!

also, male should have greyer back and almost black tail, and both sexes more scaly wings than this bird possesses, hence my three dull-looking bird guesses
