Birds of Prey ID - Peru (Colca Canyon) (1 Viewer)

Hi folks,

I wondered if anyone would be able to help me solve a mystery from several years ago.

I was just going through some pictures from a trip to Colca Canyon. I have several pictures which are recognisably Andean Condors, but these other ones I'm not sure about. Unfortunately the photos aren't great - I had some stuff stolen so these are taken with a less than brilliant substitute phone camera. Hopefully it adds to the fun trying to identify them?! Some of them will definitely need some zooming in as there are multiple birds in the photos.

I believe this one may be a Mountain Caracara but happy to be corrected.

I'm not sure how many different birds I have pictures of. Some of the others don't look the right shape or size for condor - some of the condor pictures have other birds in which look noticeably smaller, so I'm wondering if there are some hawks or eagles, or maybe some juvenile condors?

Any help would be appreciated, apologies again for the poor photos!

Thank you :)

First one looks like Mountain Caracara to me. Other than that they seem to be young Andean Condors (and an adult too). Oh and 2 Mountain Caracaras in one of the last pics too

Ah yes the black and white one is the adult you're referring to I assume - not sure how that one snuck in. Thank you! I thought the wing shapes perhaps didn't look ...rectangular? enough for condor and silhouette looked different, so is that just what the juveniles look like?

Is the small orange-y one in the centre of the third to last pic a Mountain Caracara? Had no clue about either of the birds in that one.

There are mountain caracaras in 51 05 and 51 09 at least. Which is the "third to last": what number? (Photos render in different order on different devices)

Going by the photos my Mum's partner took at Colca earlier this year, juveniles/younger immatures seem to show more bulging secondaries on the wings, making their wing shape look less parallel/rectangular.

Like The Fern, I'm not totally sure which bird you mean regarding a small orangey one.

Ah sorry - I was referring to 51 05. If you zoom in right in the centre of the pic there’s one that looks quite orange in front of the mountains

Thank you! That’s really helpful.

I was referring to the ones in 51 05 - have zoomed and screenshotted them here.
