I remember driving along with my brother near knock lake, Dublin, when we spotted a buzzard soaring over the road. We stopped to have a look and when we raised our bins, realised that above it again were two more bops..a Sparrowhawk and... an Osprey!! Classy bird for north Dublin! Would never have spotted it if we had driven past the Buzzard. A couple of years back I was attending a seminar in Little Island, Cork, in February. It finished up early and a quick look at my watch told me i had JUST enough time to nip down to Cobh and search for some cattle egrets which had been hanging around. As I sped along, racing against the light, I turned off the main Cobh road sharply and down by the potteries pool, heading for the fields the Cattle egrets had been frequenting. As I raced by the pool at a VERY fast speed, I spotted a large white bird sitting up on the bank, out of the corner of my eye. "That was a funny feckin swan" I said to myself. "Looked more like a Spoonbill......" I slammed on the brakes and reversed back to the gate overlooking the pool. Sure enough a first winter Spoonbill was happily roosting on the far side of the pond. Never caught up with the Cattle Egrets that evening, but a good find like Spoonbill made up for it! Even managed to pick up a friend at the Fota train station and get it as a tick for him before dark. Owen
