GGS was in the next field, going towards the other layby.
Showing very well from the roadside.

Brambling flock still on the Lickeys. To minimise disturbance no need to go any further than 20 feet in the beech plantation. Keep a reasonable distance from the bramble.

I popped in late in afternoon after rain.....some were looking in next field...not sure if it had been in there but it HAD been in and around left Oak in normal field before dropping down behind it.
These pics were last sighting of the year when it again plopped into the Oak.It stayed only a short time before going off behind the Oak again.

Last pic of 2013....and a crop.

GGS active in the far field, early afternoon.
150 plus bramblings and chaffinches on the Likeys.

Not often the old year ends and the new one begins with GGS and brambling on the list.

You and it were braver than me......too wet and windy ...stayed in and watched the Villa.

Keith - Phil uses a camcorder through his scope, I think. Gets decent results, as you can see. But there won't be any EXIF info for you from that setup. :)

Thanks Pete.....just wondered how he got such good close ups.
Have to ditch the 7D I think......lol.

Arrived about 10 am today with lay bys full and loads of people up on slope looking over hedge by the 40 mph sign towards Hopwood.
GGS.came quite close but not close enough.....we needed to be bit further along but Hawthorn hedge not trimmed...ouch!
Left about 11.30....off to work but going to look for GNDiver at Gailey.
Crap hold ups on m'way so only stayed 2 mins as late for work....it was on far sde of sailing pool....could not wait for it to move as it was resting.

Typical quality video and video grabs from Phil, and these acquired without the need to get closer than 100 yds plus.:t:

Hi Chris

Totally agree.
Excellent video and even better stills from Phil. The quality surpassing many Digital Camera photos ( puts my record shots to shame )
If you haven't done so already take a look at his Two barred Crossbill stills from the Wyre on Birdguides & U Tube videos.
Very impressive.

Hughie.

GGShrike seems to be happy in its surroundings at Hopwood....as far as we know its been around from The friday before xmas- but could be a lot longer.

It has had to "put up with" the farmer crossing the field most days.....dog people just wandering around the middle of the field.Horse people doing the same.
But it has not been frightened off from frequenting any field it wishes.....the only thing it seem wary of doing is coming close to the road area......could it be something to do with rows of head and shoulders keep appearing opposite where it lands in the middle of the field.

BTW....people only see a "warning" to keep to the roadside if they happen to find a site that issues the "warning".

As well as exhibiting good behavior towards the birds it could go down well if a lot of people acknowledged the locals a bit more.....many either pull up in their cars or walk past and find it hard to get any attention from many of the people who are blocking up the lay bys and the footpaths.
As well as seeing a brilliant bird on my patch I have enjoyed all the discussions I have had with interested locals.

I agree with talking to the locals about it. One of our group that went before new year, had Lent his binoculars to a father and soon who Were cycling past. They were really interested. The soon especially. Hopefully that could be a new Watchter in the making:t:.

Nice one...I was only telling (boring) someone in work about this and said the same thing.

One van that pulled over had 3 white van men in and the driver said "I love all this s*** " ...so at least it made someones day.

Two questions....
1...If we have a prolonged spell of freezing weather will it move on to try and find somewhere warmer ?

2...How many who saw it in 2013 returned to see it in 2014 ?
