All six terns looked common today - typical Midlands riffraff really, haha! One obvious yellow-legged gull and several juvenile herrings, so I wondered if any of those were yellow-legs. The way I normally split young herrings from lessers is by the almost white heads and spangly looking coverts (rather than splotchy). Yellow-legs look to be in between. I'm just assuming they don't breed around here, so juveniles are unlikely.

Anyway, the highlight to the north was a massively distant raptor, I thought. Of course buzzard, I thought. This was through binoculars. I didn't like the way it was flying though and revised downwards to gull but got the scope on it regardless. At the distance this was a problem but after a couple of recalibrations I picked it up and stayed on it. No, those wings were two-tone and... finally the forked tail. Red kite of course. My only dilemma now is whether to cheat and add it to my Bittell list, or cheat the other way and put it on West Midlands. It was that far.

I think I know what this is BUT with all the Juveniles around it could and probably will be something else...I was thinking it was a Spotted Flycatcher....
