Black objects in my Kowa scope (1 Viewer)

Iltaa,

It seems to be black specks of paint in the eyepiece.

Do you have another eyepiece or just the zoom to try?

If the scope is out of warranty, it may be that you just accept it.
Or ask Kowa to clean the eyepiece.

What scope is it?

I suppose the place for the question is in 'Spotting scopes', but here is fine.

Terveisin,
B.

Rotating the eyepiece would confirm the location of the spots.

I suppose if there is an optical window at the back of the body, the spots could be inside there, but more likely in the eyepiece.

With a magnifying glass or watchmakers glass you could use a torch to locate where the spots are.

Regards,
B.

No, if they are on an internal surface.

The eyepiece needs to be taken apart and cleaned, which with a zoom eyepiece is complicated and needs a professional, preferably Kowa.
Also maybe reblackened.

Some simple eyepieces, I have taken apart, but again one must know what one is doing.

If the eyepiece is waterproof, then a professional is needed.

I think these are paint flecks from the internal blackening, and they could move more centrally, but at the moment they shouldn't be too bothersome.

I am not sure if a Baader Mk IV zoom eyepiece works on your Kowa.

I don't know how much Kowa charges for cleaning this eyepiece or whether it can be done in Finland.
There may be a good independent repairer in Finland.

I bought six Leica Colorplan lenses from a shop there that didn't work. £5 or 50 FMKs each.
I rearranged all the lens elements and sold them for £15 each in a few minutes. I should have asked £30 or £45.

It is up to you what you want to do.

Regards,
B.

Ok, thanks a ton for the quick and informative answers

I recently had a similar issue with my Kowa 88mm scope, with what looked like black fragments of "something" . Luckily I had a more recent eyepiece available and when I switched them the spots disappeared. Looked like something inside the eyepiece was fragmenting and falling onto the lens surface.

Did you solve this issue?

I have seen something similar in a Kowa zoom. The culprit was "foil" that is used on edge of lens elements that deteriorated and crept into FOV. Accompanied by residue I assume was glue.

That's paint chips try dropping that eyepiece one to two inches on a hard table several times to shake those paint chips off of the lenses. This is what some optics companies and dealers actually tell their customers to do believe it or not.
