I've just uploaded a photo of a black woodpecker to the gallery. I never knew their plumage was partly rusty. Is that normal? Here's a link to the photo Woodpecker
Black feathers on some species fade to brownish when old, especially if the bird is living in an area with strong sun. If that can be part of the explanation for this bird I do not know.
