We have recently taken care of two nestling blue tits. They are now fully feathered and are approximately 22 days old. They are just feeding by themselves so all great news so far. But I wondered please if anyone has any sound advice on when and how to release them? Thank you so much.

Hi Melmac and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

When they are feeding by themselves and no longer looking to you for support, that is the time to let them go.

The 'where' should ideally be as close to the place where they were found as this would be their natural habitat. Preferably placed on the branches of a hedge, shrub or tree, so they can feel secure and shouldn't be noticed by predators.

Failing that, if your garden is suitable and already attracts Blue Tits that will be fine. Just don't leave them on the ground is my advice anyway.

I'm sure someone else will be along with other ideas too.
