Blue Tits (1 Viewer)

Hi Everyone I'm new to forum and wondered if anyone can advise on a nest box question. For the first time we placed two nest boxes in our garden on either end of our shed about 4mtrs apart, one box became occupied almost immediately and we watched with delight as the blue tits came and went we then heard the chirping of youngsters and recently all went quiet and the birds were no more. I decided to inspect both boxes and am confused as to what I found, the box with the activity was empty and nest material in abundance but the nest was wet as was the box and a number of tiny white maggots, I've cleaned out the box and am drying it out, the other nest box was empty and dry though there is evidence that the box had been visited as part of the wood appeared gnawed away as it also was in the occupied box. apologies for the long winded account but I just wondered if any of the above is normal and do you think the young birds would have made it ?

Welcome to Birdforum.

It sounds as though the young have fledged. We don’t look in our nest boxes until September when they get cleaned out so I’m not sure why the nesting material was wet, unless the parents had been flying in wet weather and the nest got damp from that.

Thank you it has been very wet

Hi Flyingeleven and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. Unfortunately you haven't given a time scale from when the eggs would have appeared to have been laid, when you thought they may have hatched and when they all disappeared; so it's not really easy to guess as to whether they had fledged safely or not.

You may find our Opus article on Blue Tits helpful: Eurasian Blue Tit - BirdForum Opus

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Hi and thank you for the welcome, the nest box became occupied some time in March we’ve only recently noticed they’ve gone, we’ve had mixed weather here in Buckinghamshire but there have been spells of heavy rain
