Hi Jos. You make some very valid points which mirror my own with regards to being neutral on this often contentious subject. If my argument about man having hunted since the year dot seemed a bit shallow and maybe it was, then if you read between the lines, I was merely trying to point out to the anti hunting/wildfowling brigade or the naive, that man has always been a hunter and hunting is here to stay whether we like it or not. I'm glad you and a couple of others have picked up on the point about irresponsible and deliberate shooting. This has to be condemned whole heartedly by all and it only tarnishes all hunters with the same brush. Timwootons points about foreign shooters causing problems on Orkney also ring true here in Ireland.Birds and mammals are being blasted for fun and fish are being blown out of lakes/lochs with explosives, which are causing huge worries and friction with the local angling fraternity. My point here is condone these kind of idiots but respect the good majority who go about their hunting/wildfowling duties responsibly. Here is a point for all to ponder over. If this thread had begun with the initial post contributor witnessing or reporting a Mallard or Wigeon being shot, instead of a Blue Winged Teal which are rare in Ireland/ UK, do you think we'ed be getting so excited on this topic? Personally I think not, but no doubt one or two might get rattled still. This debate will no doubt rumble on.
