Hi all,

I got back from British Columbia just over a week ago. It was a brilliant trip with 178 species, 96 lifers and a whole host of mammals. Here is my ebird trip report: https://ebird.org/tripreport/254253

I hired a car from Vancouver and did 1 night Hope, 4 nights Osoyoos, 2 nights Metchosin, 2 nights Port Hardy, 1 night Campbell River, 2 nights Vancouver. Some brilliant birding and amazing scenery.

Highlights included:

  • An amazing experience watching a Great Grey Owl for half an hour on a post less than 20 metres away.
  • Seeing 9 Grizzly Bears in one day on a trip to Knight Inlet!
  • A boat trip to Hlas (Triangle Island) and its 3,000 strong Tufted Puffin colony. Also saw 3 Horned Puffin!
  • Finding Townsend's Solitaire at the last minute at Manning Park before having to dash to the ferry.
  • Super American warblers such as Townsend's Warbler, Macgillivray's Warbler and Black-throated Grey Warbler.
  • Having my night birding interrupted by a black bear on consecutive nights. This probably cost me Flammulated Owl but I still got Common Poorwill and Western Screech Owl.
  • Seeing birds I usually only see on the sea in winter in summer plumage such as Great Northern Diver and Red-necked Grebe.
  • Western Bluebirds and Lazuli Bunting being abundant in the Okanagan sage brush.
  • Victoria. A fantastic city.
  • Encountering 3 Coyote in the Okanagan.
  • Randomly finding a feeder with over 40 Evening Grosbeak on it.

Let me know if any questions!

Nice one Oli, sounds like a cracking trip. The alcid's and Evening Grosbeak are particularly gripping! I may have to look into return trip in spring sometime soon...
