Bulgaria - advice for backpacker on reaching eastern Rhodopes vultures (1 Viewer)

Hi all,
I'm doing a large euro trip but planning on some Bulgarian birdwatching later this month.
I'll spend some leisurely days at Varnas and Burgas but would also love to figure out how to get to the eastern Rhodopes to see the vulture centre.
I'm looking for any insight and info into visiting the centre as a day trip - by public transport (unlikely i know) or by any lower cost tour operators. I'd rather not pay a driver or taxi for a whole day, and I can't justify a private one night tour with Neophron, for example.

I also can't seem to find where a good city base is to reach rhodope from either, would it be Plovdiv?
Thanks in advance, any insight appreciated. It may even be that this is not the best time to go to the centre!
