Before getting there we had another stop off, taking a side road near Gorna Kula. This was another highlight of the trip, particularly as it was just a roadside stop. Again we didn’t know where to look as species were continually called including two <strong>Rollers</strong>, several <strong>Red-backed Shrikes</strong>, <strong>Lesser Grey Shrike</strong>, <strong>Golden Orioles</strong>, <strong>Hoopoe</strong>, <strong>Cuckoo</strong>, <strong>Turtle Dove</strong>, <strong>Corn Bunting</strong> and <strong>Syrian Woodpecker</strong>. </p><p></p><p>We eventually carried along the track hearing <strong>Eastern Olivaceous Warbler</strong>, <strong>Eastern Orphean Warbler</strong> and brief views of an <strong>Olive-tree Warbler</strong>. There were many shrikes by the side of the road and near a farm we saw a <strong>White Stork</strong>. Overhead a couple of <strong>Hobbys</strong> were hawking for insects and on the River Krumovitsa, that we over-looked, a <strong>Great White Egret</strong>. Further up, as it got rockier, we had lovely views over the area as the sun was getting lower. On the river was a <strong>Black Stork</strong>, a <strong>White Stork</strong> flew past, a male <strong>Black-eared Wheatear</strong> showed well and we heard a <strong>Rock Nuthatch</strong>. </p><p></p><p>We had to drag ourselves away from this great bit of birding as we still had to get to the hotel to check in. We drove in to Krumovgrad and we had to go through a market to arrive at the Hotel Divna. This hotel had recently been upgraded and looked slightly out of place amongst the slightly run down adjacent buildings and market stalls. We changed and showered and then headed out to a restaurant in the town, the only place we didn’t have an evening meal within the hotel we were staying in. </p><p></p><p>The birding for the day still wasn’t over, en route to the restaurant <strong>Pallid Swifts</strong> were overhead and after a nice meal in the restaurant it was time to visit a local park. The target here was Scops Owl and in the darkness, although there were some lamps within the park, we heard first one then and two more <strong>Scops Owl</strong> and we also heard a <strong>Little Owl</strong>. We heard a <strong>Scops Owl</strong> in another tree so carefully walked towards it scanning the branches to find the owl. A bare branch just above our heads was noted to be vibrating and then we realised an owl was just feet away perched on it but unfortunately it flew off before we got to see it well. It was at long last time to stop the birding, around 11 o’clock as some had been birding for almost 17 hours, but not before we had a few more <strong>Scops Owl</strong> calling on our way back to the hotel.</p><p></p><p>1.Roller</p><p>2.Red-backed Shrike</p><p>3.Lesser Grey Shrike</p><p>4.White Stork</p><p>5.Black-eared Wheatear</p></blockquote><p></p>
