Buteo, not far from Toronto (1 Viewer)

Hi,

Only one picture of a bird, unfortunately. While looking in binos, the bird was classic buteo-shape with rather short wings. The most prominent was a thick white tail band with thick black tail end. Something like Broad-winged tail type... And accipiter-like striked underwings also...
Seen it today, about 120 km NE of Toronto.

Sounds like a broad-winged hawk - unless it's too early for that? Not possible to tell anything useful from the photo, except that it's not inconsistent with that, including the tiniest hint of a thick white bar mid-tail.

It's early in Broad-winged Hawk migration in Ontario, but certainly not too early. The hawk watch at Beamer on the Niagara Peninsula recorded 104 Broad-winged Hawks today. Your description and the photo are quite consistent with Broad-winged Hawk.
